Chapter 9 - The House Takes Bella.
Eleanor dressed Bella in pale blue for the foundation luncheon and tied white ribbons over the marks on her wrists.
Hundreds of donors filled the estate garden beneath striped awnings.
Before the guests arrived, Eleanor made Bella practice her statement in front of a mirror.
Every time Bella used the word tape, Miles rang a silver bell and forced her to begin again.
Eleanor promised that Adrian would be sent to a place like Saint Orison if Bella embarrassed the family.
Bella pretended to believe her.
While Miles adjusted a camera, she slipped a straight pin from the mirror table into her braid.
Ruth had taught her that a small tool could become a door if fear did not make her forget it.
News cameras faced a small stage surrounded by white roses.
Eleanor kept one hand on Bella's shoulder as she addressed the crowd.
"My granddaughter has suffered because a grieving man refused to accept help."
Bella saw Miles beside the cameras and Conrad near the gate.
She also saw Tomas trimming a hedge he had trimmed twice that morning.
He touched two fingers to his cap.
That was Sophie's signal to be brave.
Eleanor lowered the microphone.
"Tell them what your father made you do."
Bella repeated the sentence she had been forced to memorize.
"My father told me to say Grandma hurt me."
Reporters shouted questions.
Eleanor smiled with quiet triumph.
Bella took one breath.
"But my grandmother taught me how to lie."
She used the pin to cut the thread holding the ribbons in place.
The movement was tiny, but Eleanor felt it and tightened her grip.
Bella remembered Adrian telling her she never had to earn his help.
She decided the whole country could see the truth even if her voice shook while she said it.
The garden erupted.
Miles cut power to the microphones, but the livestream continued on three private phones.
Donors who had spent years applauding Eleanor began backing away from the stage.
One former Saint Orison nurse shouted that Bella was telling the truth.
Security guards moved toward her, and half a dozen guests raised their phones to record them.
For the first time, Eleanor could not control every witness in the garden.
Bella tore away the ribbons and held up her wrists.
"She taped me because I found my mom's phone!"
Eleanor dragged Bella from the stage while calling her hysterical.
Tomas triggered the irrigation system.
Water exploded across the lawn and blinded the guards.
Bella slipped through the white roses and ran toward the fountain.
She crawled through the hidden hatch, following the tunnel by touch.
Her white sneakers slapped against wet stone.
She reached the room of dead clocks and used the old speaking tube.
"Dad, if you can hear me, I did the brave part."
Adrian heard the message through the silver recorder in locker six.
Sophie had designed the system so every tube transmission copied itself to the device.
"I'm coming," he said, though Bella could not hear him.
A clock began ticking behind her.
Bella turned.
Eleanor stood in the doorway holding a roll of black tape.
"Brave girls," Eleanor said, "are simply disobedient girls who have not yet learned the cost."
Bella backed toward the broken window.
