PART 3 – The Truth Anna Tried to Hide

Anna begged me not to ask.
But silence was no longer an option.
Not tonight.
Not ever again.
I brought her back to the bedroom, wrapped her in blankets, and knelt in front of her.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
She shook her head, crying harder.
“It will destroy your family…”
“No,” I whispered. “It already has.”
That’s when she broke.
“She locks me in the kitchen when you leave,” Anna confessed. “She says I don’t deserve to rest… that I’m lazy… that I’m trapping you with this baby.”
My chest tightened.
“She checks what I eat… sometimes throws my food away.”
My hands started shaking.
“And…” Anna hesitated.
I swallowed. “And what?”
“She said… if I ever told you… she would make sure I lost the baby.”
The room went completely silent.
I felt something dark rise inside me.
Not anger.
May you like
Something colder.
Something final.
