Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.
The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,
casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast
Vivian Hale stood at the head of the long mahogany table, still wearing the crisp white military dress uniform she had been ordered to wear for the evening ceremony.
Her medals caught the amber light, but nothing in her face suggested celebration.
Four-year-old Sophie sat beside her in a frilly pink dress, hugging a white plush bunny beneath her chin.
Outside the tall windows, the last sunlight burned gold across the stone columns of the Hale estate in Virginia.
Vivian’s phone vibrated once against the table.
The message contained only four words.
GET SOPHIE OUT NOW.
Vivian read it twice before deleting it.
Sophie noticed the change in her mother’s expression.
“Mom?”
Vivian forced a calm smile that did not reach her eyes.
“We’re going for a little walk, sweetheart.”
She took Sophie’s hand and moved through the silent foyer without explaining anything to the confused household staff.
By the time they reached the sweeping front steps, the sun was sinking behind the oaks and the driveway had turned the color of copper.
Sophie held her bunny tighter.
“Are we going home?”
Vivian looked down at her daughter.
“This is home.”
Then engines roared beyond the iron gates.
Three black government SUVs turned into the circular drive with enough speed to send gravel snapping against the stone planters.
Vivian stopped halfway down the steps.
The lead vehicle braked hard.
Doors opened almost at once.
Men in dark suits stepped out and spread across the driveway with the precision of people who had rehearsed the moment.
Agent Ethan Cole came up the stairs alone.
He was in his late thirties, clean-cut, grim, and carrying a plain manila folder under one arm.
Vivian recognized him from two classified briefings in Washington.
She had never seen him look afraid before.
He stopped two steps below her.
“It’s finished, Vivian.”
He extended the folder.
Vivian did not take it immediately.
“What is?”
Ethan’s eyes flicked toward Sophie.
“Take the folder.”
Vivian accepted it with one hand while keeping the other wrapped around Sophie’s fingers.
A fourth door opened behind Ethan.
Deputy Defense Secretary Richard Caldwell stepped from the lead SUV.
His silver hair glowed in the fading light, and his dark navy suit looked almost black against the sunset.
Caldwell had pinned Vivian’s first combat medal on her uniform twelve years earlier.
He had also stood beside her at her husband Nathan’s memorial six months ago.
Now he stared at her as if she were an enemy combatant.
“Vivian,” he called.
She opened the folder.
The first page bore her photograph, her service number, and a red classification stamp.
The next line made her stomach turn cold.
MAJOR VIVIAN HALE — SUSPENDED PENDING TREASON INVESTIGATION.
Sophie tugged on her sleeve.
“Mommy, why are those men here?”
Caldwell climbed the first step.
“Tell her.”
Vivian’s jaw tightened.
“Tell her what?”
Caldwell’s voice carried across the entire driveway.
“Tell your daughter who her father really worked for.”
Vivian looked back at the page.
Under Nathan Hale’s name was a designation she had never seen before.
BLACK LANTERN.
