Chapter 14 - Ten Minutes to Burn the Truth.

The facility’s purge system had been designed to destroy classified hardware before an enemy could capture it.
Now it was preparing to turn the archive room into a furnace.
Vivian ran back toward the control center.
The upload displayed ninety-three percent.
Ethan had Voss restrained against the wall.
Nathan held Sophie near the exit.
Kessler and two trusted agents had finally entered from the east side.
Caldwell was with the medical team outside.
“Stop the purge,” Vivian ordered.
Kessler reached the console.
“Voss changed the administrator codes.”
Nathan looked at the rabbit.
“The master token can cancel it.”
Voss laughed.
“Not without the paired voices.”
Vivian stepped toward the microphone.
“Then we use them.”
Nathan shook his head.
“The system will demand the full authentication statement.”
Vivian opened the folder.
The genuine directive was still inside.
She found the protected-witness page.
Sophie stood beside her.
“Do I talk too?”
Vivian crouched.
“Only if you want to help Mommy turn off a very bad machine.”
Sophie nodded solemnly.
“I can do it.”
Vivian looked toward Voss.
“You used my child as a password.”
Voss stared back.
“Nathan did.”
Nathan flinched.
Vivian did not defend him.
That argument belonged to another day, assuming they survived this one.
The countdown reached eight minutes.
Vivian read the authentication phrase.
“Ash remembers the echo.”
The system accepted her voice.
A second prompt appeared.
Sophie leaned toward the microphone.
“Bunny remembers Daddy.”
The screen rejected it.
Sophie looked frightened.
“I did it wrong.”
Nathan moved beside her.
“No, sweetheart.”
He touched the torn rabbit’s ear.
“What did Grandpa teach you to say when you played the secret game?”
Sophie thought hard.
Then her eyes widened.
“The echo always comes home.”
She spoke the sentence into the microphone.
The system chimed.
PAIRED AUTHENTICATION ACCEPTED.
The purge paused.
Everyone exhaled.
Then a new message appeared.
FINAL AUTHORITY REQUIRED.
Vivian looked at Kessler.
He tried his code.
Denied.
Caldwell’s remote code was denied too.
Voss smiled through split lips.
“You still do not understand who owns Black Lantern.”
Vivian looked at the folder.
The first forged page carried Kessler’s copied signature.
The real protective directive carried no individual signature at all.
Instead, it had a small embossed symbol of an ash tree.
Vivian had seen that symbol before.
On her father’s memorial plaque.
On the brass key.
And inside the old digital recorder.
She pulled the recorder from her pocket.
Nathan stared at it.
“You still have that?”
Vivian pressed play.
Her father’s recorded voice emerged instead of Nathan’s.
“Final authority recognizes the officer who refused the unlawful order.”
The system immediately activated.
Vivian stared at the screen.
Her father continued.
“Vivian, if you reached this point, Black Lantern failed exactly as I feared.”
The countdown stopped at six minutes, twelve seconds.
PURGE CANCELLED.
UPLOAD COMPLETE.
Voss’s expression collapsed.
Phones began ringing throughout the control room.
Kessler answered one.
His face changed as he listened.
“Inspector General teams have the mirror.”
Ethan almost smiled.
“It is over.”
Vivian looked at the manila folder in her hands.
“No.”
She removed one final sealed page she had never noticed beneath the back cover.
It was addressed to her in her father’s handwriting.
