Chapter 8 - The Choice That Proved Everything.

Caldwell’s blood soaked through Vivian’s white sleeve within seconds.
Ethan grabbed his shoulders.
“We have to move him.”
Vivian looked at the open ground between the carriage house and the nearest federal vehicle.
A sniper had that entire distance covered.
Kessler shouted from behind the SUV.
“Do not move Caldwell!”
Vivian laughed bitterly.
“You want me to let him bleed out?”
“I want you alive.”
“And him?”
Kessler did not answer.
That silence decided it for her.
Vivian pulled Caldwell backward into the carriage house.
Ethan helped drag him to the tunnel entrance.
Sophie followed, clutching Bunny and crying silently.
Vivian could have escaped through the woods with her daughter.
She could have left Caldwell to the people who had lied to her for years.
Instead, she ripped the sash from her ceremonial uniform and packed it against his wound.
Ethan watched her.
“You realize this man helped fake your husband’s death.”
“I realize he has answers and a pulse.”
Caldwell groaned.
Vivian leaned close.
“Richard, stay awake.”
His eyes opened slightly.
“The chapel.”
“You already said that.”
“Your father built a second safe.”
“What is in it?”
“The part Nathan could not trust me with.”
Vivian’s jaw tightened.
“You expect that sentence to make me feel better?”
“No.”
Caldwell coughed.
“I expect it to keep you alive.”
Ethan located an old maintenance cart inside the tunnel.
They laid Caldwell across it and pushed toward the mansion’s private chapel.
Above them, Kessler’s teams searched room by room.
The radio chatter grew closer.
Ethan whispered.
“They will find the library entrance soon.”
Vivian looked at Sophie.
The little girl’s cheeks were streaked with tears, but she had stopped asking questions.
That frightened Vivian more than the gunfire.
She knelt beside her while Ethan pushed the cart.
“You are doing so well.”
Sophie held up Bunny.
“Daddy said brave is when scared doesn’t pick.”
Vivian’s heart twisted.
“What does that mean?”
“He said you can be scared and still pick good.”
Vivian closed her eyes for one second.
Nathan had said something similar before his last deployment.
Fear does not make the decision.
You do.
They reached a ladder beneath the chapel sacristy.
Vivian climbed first and pushed open a trapdoor.
The chapel was empty and lit only by red emergency lamps.
Caldwell directed her toward the memorial plaque bearing her father’s name.
“Third stone from the left.”
Vivian pressed it.
Nothing happened.
“Say the phrase,” Caldwell whispered.
Vivian understood.
“Ash remembers the echo.”
A lock clicked beneath the floor.
A narrow compartment opened.
Inside was a metal case no larger than a book.
Vivian lifted it out.
The brass key opened this lock too.
Inside were printed financial ledgers, photographs, and a memory card sealed in plastic.
The top photograph showed Nathan meeting three men at a private airfield.
One was Briggs.
One was the CEO of Solace Dynamics.
The third was Leonard Kessler.
On the back, Nathan had written a date.
It was two weeks after his supposed death.
Vivian stared at Caldwell.
“You knew he was alive.”
Caldwell shook his head weakly.
“No.”
Ethan picked up the photograph.
“Then somebody wanted this picture found.”
A voice came from the chapel doorway.
May you like
“Correct.”
Director Kessler stood there with a gun aimed at Vivian.
