Chapter 12 - The Betrayal He Needed Her to Believe.

Vivian slowly lowered her pistol.

Voss smiled as if she had won.

Nathan did not look at Vivian again.

“Bring her in.”

The security door buzzed open.

Ethan whispered behind Vivian.

“Do not trust him.”

Vivian answered without moving her lips.

“I trust the phrase.”

She entered the glass room alone.

Voss kept one hand on Sophie’s shoulder.

Nathan stood beside the server console.

Up close, Vivian could see bruising beneath his collar and a healing cut across one wrist.

He was not Voss’s partner.

He was her prisoner wearing the posture of an accomplice.

Vivian wanted to cross the room and hold him.

Instead, she looked at him with hatred convincing enough to protect the lie.

“You abandoned us.”

Nathan’s eyes hardened.

“I protected you.”

“By making your daughter think you burned to death?”

His jaw tightened.

Voss interrupted.

“Touching reunion aside, we need the phrase.”

She placed Bunny against a biometric reader.

A hidden speaker inside the toy emitted a soft sequence of tones.

The main screen displayed two empty voiceprint fields.

VIVIAN HALE.

SOPHIE HALE.

Voss handed Vivian the manila folder.

“You will read the statement on the final page.”

Vivian opened it.

The statement was a confession admitting she had transferred classified material to Nathan.

If recorded, it would complete the evidence already built against her.

“You are not just opening the archive.”

Voss smiled.

“I am closing the investigation.”

“By framing me.”

“By giving the system a clean villain.”

Sophie looked at Vivian.

“Mommy, do I have to read too?”

Vivian’s heart pounded.

Nathan shifted one finger against the edge of the console.

Tap.

Pause.

Tap, tap.

It was an old field signal Vivian knew from their early marriage.

WAIT FOR ECHO.

Vivian looked at the confession.

Then she began reading.

“I, Major Vivian Hale, acknowledge that I knowingly transferred protected—”

Nathan interrupted loudly.

“Wrong page.”

Voss turned toward him.

“What?”

Nathan grabbed the folder from Vivian and flipped several sheets.

“The system requires the authentication declaration, not the confession.”

Voss stepped closer.

Nathan held up a page.

“This one.”

Vivian saw his thumb covering most of the text.

At the bottom was the protected-witness phrase.

ASH REMEMBERS THE ECHO.

Voss’s eyes narrowed.

Nathan smiled thinly.

“You wanted Black Lantern access.”

“Then do not corrupt the sequence.”

Voss hesitated.

That was enough.

Ethan killed the lights from the outer control panel.

Nathan swept Sophie off the chair.

Vivian lunged at Voss.

A gunshot exploded in the darkness.

Glass shattered.

Sophie screamed.

Emergency lights flashed on.

Nathan was on the floor with Sophie beneath him.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Vivian dropped beside him.

“Nathan!”

“I’m fine.”

“You are bleeding.”

“Not mine.”

Voss lay against the console clutching her shoulder.

Ethan entered with his weapon raised.

Nathan pulled the white bunny from beneath Sophie.

The toy’s torn side exposed a tiny recorder.

A green light was blinking.

Nathan looked at Vivian.

“She confessed enough.”

Voss laughed through the pain.

“You think a recording matters?”

Nathan’s face turned grim.

“No.”

He pointed toward the server screen.

“But the echo does.”

The screen changed.
