Chapter 9 - The Photograph That Lied.

Kessler closed the chapel door behind him.

He was alone, but Vivian knew armed teams were somewhere nearby.

“Put the case down,” he said.

Ethan raised his weapon.

Kessler aimed directly at Sophie.

“Do not.”

Ethan froze.

Vivian moved in front of her daughter.

“If you point that at my child again, you will not leave this room.”

Kessler’s expression did not change.

“I am not here to hurt Sophie.”

“You keep saying that while aiming weapons at her.”

Kessler glanced at Caldwell bleeding on the floor.

“Richard, you should have told her the whole truth years ago.”

Caldwell tried to sit up.

“You do not get to lecture anyone about truth.”

Kessler nodded toward the photograph.

“Look carefully, Vivian.”

She did.

Nathan stood beside Kessler and Briggs near the private jet.

The timestamp printed in the corner appeared to prove Nathan had survived the explosion.

Kessler spoke calmly.

“That photograph was manufactured.”

Vivian’s eyes narrowed.

“You expect me to believe you came here to debunk evidence against yourself?”

“I expect you to notice your husband’s left hand.”

Vivian looked again.

Nathan’s wedding ring was on his right hand.

She felt a chill.

“Nathan never wore it there.”

“Because that is not Nathan’s body.”

Ethan looked closer.

“Composite image.”

Kessler lowered his gun slightly.

“Someone built an entire chain of evidence designed to make every side suspect every other side.”

Caldwell whispered.

“Solace.”

Kessler looked at him.

“Not the company.”

“Then who?” Vivian demanded.

Kessler’s face hardened.

“The person inside Black Lantern who controls the evidence system.”

Ethan immediately understood.

“Briggs.”

Kessler shook his head.

“Briggs is an errand boy.”

Vivian picked up the financial ledger.

“Then give me a name.”

Before Kessler could answer, his radio crackled.

A woman’s voice said one sentence.

“Package is secure.”

Kessler went pale.

Vivian saw his reaction.

“What package?”

Kessler pressed the radio button.

“Repeat.”

“Package is secure and moving east.”

Sophie looked at Vivian.

“Mommy, Bunny is gone.”

Vivian turned.

The white rabbit was no longer beside Sophie.

The chapel side door stood open by less than an inch.

Someone had entered while everyone watched Kessler.

Vivian rushed to the door.

The narrow hallway beyond was empty.

A scrap of white plush stuffing lay on the floor.

Sophie began to cry.

“She took Bunny.”

“Who?” Vivian asked.

“The lady with yellow hair.”

Kessler closed his eyes.

“Dr. Mara Voss.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Your deputy director?”

Kessler nodded.

“She manages Black Lantern authentication and evidence custody.”

Vivian looked down at the empty passage.

The truth shifted again.

“You said Briggs was the errand boy.”

“He answers to Voss.”

Caldwell forced out another question.

“Why take a stuffed rabbit if the key is already here?”

Sophie sniffed.

“Daddy put a song in Bunny too.”

Vivian turned back.

“What song?”

Sophie touched her ear.

“The one Daddy said only Mommy can hear.”

Kessler’s face changed.

“That is not a song.”

Vivian stared at him.

“What is it?”

“A voiceprint cipher.”

Ethan understood first.

“The rabbit contains the master access token.”

Kessler looked directly at Vivian.

“If Voss gets it to the Black Lantern archive, she can rewrite every record in the system.”

May you like

Vivian’s expression hardened.

“Then we get Bunny back.”
