Chapter 10 - The Secret He Dug Out of My Father.

Alexander knew exactly which name could still make me hesitate.

My father, Thomas Moreland, had built Moreland Holdings from a two-room office into a national logistics company.

He had also died with enemies.

That was the part business profiles rarely mentioned.

"What could he have?" Dana asked.

I stared at Alexander's message.

"I don't know."

That answer frightened me more than any specific accusation.

My father had been demanding.

Secretive.

Proud.

He had taught me to read contracts before I learned to drive.

But he had never pretended business was clean.

Martin called our records team.

Dana contacted the estate archive.

By evening, we found the first clue.

Alexander had requested access to an old litigation file three months earlier using credentials from my temporary property authorization.

The file concerned a warehouse acquisition in Newark from twelve years ago.

"There was a lawsuit," Graham told me over the phone.

"Your father settled it."

"For what?"

"The seller claimed Thomas pressured him during a debt crisis."

"Did he?"

Graham sighed.

"Your father could be ruthless."

"That is not an answer."

"The transaction was legal."

"Was it fair?"

Another pause.

"Probably not."

I closed my eyes.

Alexander did not need evidence of a crime.

He needed something ugly enough to embarrass the family and shake the board.

Ten minutes later, he emailed me a scan of a handwritten memo from my father.

The words were harsh.

If Keller cannot carry the debt, force the sale before Friday.

Do not give him another extension.

Alexander added a message beneath it.

THE PUBLIC WILL LOVE THIS VERSION OF YOUR SAINTED FATHER.

I felt anger rise.

Not at my father.

Not yet.

At myself.

Part of me still wanted to protect Alexander from becoming even worse than I already knew he was.

Some last wounded piece of the woman who had loved him wanted to believe he would not desecrate a dead man just to save himself.

Then Dana said something that cut through it.

"He is counting on your shame."

I looked at her.

"What?"

"He wants you to confuse embarrassment with guilt."

She pointed at the memo.

"Maybe your father made a hard, even cruel business decision."

"That does not make Alexander's fraud disappear."

I knew she was right.

So I did the one thing Alexander would never expect.

I called Graham.

"Put the Newark file on the agenda for tomorrow's board meeting."

"Sophia—"

"All of it."

"Even the settlement?"

"Especially the settlement."

Then I called our communications director.

"Prepare a statement acknowledging the dispute before Alexander leaks it."

She sounded stunned.

"You want to disclose it ourselves?"

"Yes."

Alexander's power existed only while the secret remained secret.

I was done letting him own the timing of my life.

At eleven that night, another unknown-number message arrived.

For days, I had assumed the sender was Khloe.

Now Khloe was sitting across from Dana in another office, giving a formal statement.

So it could not be her.

The message contained only an address.

A storage facility in Queens.

Then a unit number.

Then six words.

YOUR FATHER LEFT SOMETHING FOR YOU.

I showed Dana.

She stared at the screen.

"Do you know this place?"

"No."

"Then you are not going alone."

I looked back at the message.

My father had been dead for six years.

Yet somehow, the deeper I went into Alexander's lies, the closer I seemed to get to something my father had hidden from me.

And I could not tell whether it was protection or another betrayal.
