Chapter 12 - The Boardroom Where He Lost Control.

By noon, my father's Newark memo was online.
A business blog called it evidence of the Moreland family's ruthless legacy.
Two reporters waited outside our headquarters.
Alexander had also circulated a statement claiming our marriage was valid and that I had fabricated evidence after a "private marital disagreement."
Six months earlier, that kind of public attack would have terrified me.
Now it only clarified the next move.
I walked into the boardroom carrying the red folder from Queens.
Every director was present.
So were outside counsel, our forensic accountant, and the head of corporate compliance.
Alexander entered five minutes later with a new attorney.
He looked pleased by the attention.
"I assume we are finally going to discuss Sophia's conduct," he said.
Graham stared at him.
"We are going to discuss everyone's conduct."
I stood before anyone could begin arguing.
"First, the Newark transaction."
Alexander smiled.
He thought I was cornered.
"My father pushed a distressed seller to close a transaction twelve years ago," I said.
"It was legal."
"It was also aggressive, and I understand why the seller believed it was unfair."
Alexander's smile weakened.
"The settlement will be released to the board and reviewed independently."
I placed the full file on the table.
"I will not hide behind my father's reputation, and I will not pretend every decision he made was perfect."
Silence followed.
Then I turned toward Alexander.
"Now yours."
Dana distributed certified copies of the Nevada marriage record.
The forensic specialist displayed a magnified image of the disputed voting authorization.
"The signature layer was printed separately from the body text," she said.
"Ink distribution and printer artifacts are inconsistent with an original wet signature."
Alexander's attorney leaned toward him.
I continued.
"The witness has admitted the document was false."
Khloe entered through the side door with her own attorney.
Alexander's face tightened.
She placed a signed statement on the table.
"I witnessed something Sophia never signed," she said.
"That was wrong."
Alexander stood.
"She is lying to save herself."
Khloe looked at him.
"Then let's play your recording."
Dana clicked the audio file.
Alexander's voice filled the boardroom.
Once Sophia signs in Maui, move the first amount through Blue Laurel.
Judith's voice followed.
And if she notices?
Alexander answered.
She won't until we control the paper trail.
No one moved.
Alexander looked around the room as if searching for one person still willing to believe him.
He found none.
His new attorney closed his folder.
"My client will not be making further statements today."
Alexander snapped toward him.
"I am making one."
He pointed at me.
"She is doing this because she cannot handle rejection."
Something inside me became completely still.
"Rejection?"
"You needed me, Sophia."
He laughed bitterly.
"You were lonely, suspicious, impossible to please."
"And yet you proposed."
"Because your name opened doors."
His lawyer whispered sharply.
Too late.
The room had heard him.
Alexander realized it a second later.
Graham leaned back in his chair.
"There it is."
Alexander's face reddened.
"That is not what I meant."
"It sounded remarkably clear," Dana said.
The head of compliance stood.
"Pending the investigation, all credentials associated with Mr. Mercer are permanently disabled."
"You cannot shut me out!" Alexander shouted.
Graham's voice was quiet.
"You were never in."
Security approached.
Alexander turned toward me one last time.
"You think you won?"
I met his eyes.
"No."
"I think I finally stopped losing."
He was escorted out.
For the first time since JFK, I breathed without feeling someone else's hand around my future.
Then Dana's phone rang.
She listened for less than a minute.
Her expression changed.
"Sophia, we have another problem."
"What now?"
"Judith Mercer has emptied one of the holding-company accounts."
"How much?"
"Three hundred thousand dollars."
I stared at the closed boardroom doors.
Alexander had lost control.
