Chapter 5 - His Mother Knew Before I Did.

Judith Mercer had hugged me after the ceremony and called me the daughter she had always wanted.

Now her name sat on corporate paperwork connected to nearly two million dollars of attempted transfers from my accounts.

I wanted to call her immediately.

Dana stopped me.

"Do not warn anyone until we understand the structure."

"She stood three feet away while her married son exchanged vows with me."

"I know."

"She helped him."

"Probably."

That word made me angrier than certainty would have.

Probably meant we still needed proof.

I spent the next morning in a conference room at Moreland Holdings with Dana, Martin, and our forensic accountant, Elias Shaw.

Elias projected a web of companies onto the wall.

Blue Laurel Holdings belonged to Khloe.

Mercer Strategic Ventures belonged to Judith.

A third company, Pacific Meridian Consulting, had been formed only six weeks earlier.

Its ownership was hidden behind a Wyoming registration service.

"The transfer instructions route through all three," Elias said.

"Why?"

"To make the money harder to trace."

"Could Alexander have completed it?"

"Not without additional authority."

Dana slid a document toward me.

"This is what he intended to get at the resort."

The heading read SPOUSAL ASSET MANAGEMENT AUTHORIZATION.

My name appeared beneath it.

So did Alexander's.

"I never saw this."

"He apparently expected you to sign it tomorrow."

I scanned the clauses.

The language was dense, but one sentence stood out.

The authorized spouse may direct transfers, investments, and temporary custodial movements in the interest of marital planning.

"He wanted me to give him access to my trust distributions."

"Limited access," Dana said.

"At first."

I laughed without humor.

"That sounds reassuring."

Elias clicked to another slide.

"There is one more problem."

A scanned email appeared.

It was from Judith to Alexander.

Subject: AFTER THE CEREMONY.

The body contained only four lines.

She will be emotional and tired.

Do not discuss numbers in New York.

Get her to Maui.

Khloe can handle the documents once you are there.

My vision blurred.

"Where did you get this?"

"A copy was forwarded to a vendor account during the document-preparation process."

Dana leaned forward.

"Sophia, this indicates planning, but we still need the original chain."

I stood and walked to the window.

Thirty floors below, Manhattan moved as if nothing had happened.

For eighteen months, I had thought Judith's warmth was genuine.

She invited me to Sunday dinners.

She sent me recipes.

She told me Alexander had never loved anyone the way he loved me.

Now I understood that she had not been welcoming me into a family.

She had been helping position me inside a trap.

My phone rang.

Alexander.

I let it go to voicemail.

A moment later, another call came.

Then another.

Finally, a text appeared.

WE LANDED. WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?

I looked at Dana.

"Can I answer him now?"

She considered it.

"Say nothing about the evidence."

I typed one sentence.

HAVE A WONDERFUL HONEYMOON.

I pressed send.

Twenty seconds later, he called again.

I declined it.

Then Khloe called.

I declined hers too.

Five minutes passed.

My phone rang from a Maui number.

I answered.

"Ms. Moreland?"

A polite male voice sounded deeply uncomfortable.

"This is Daniel from the resort front desk."

"Yes?"

"Mr. Mercer is here."

"I assumed he would be."

"There appears to be a payment issue."

I looked at Martin.

He already knew.

"What kind of issue?"

"Everything associated with the original reservation has been frozen."

I allowed myself one small smile.

"Then please tell Mr. Mercer he should speak to whoever legally controls those funds."

There was shouting in the background.

Alexander's voice.

Then Khloe's.

Then the receptionist lowered his voice.

"Ma'am, he says you are his wife."

I stared at the marriage certificate on the table.

"Tell him," I said, "that is exactly what we are about to find out."

Before I hung up, a new email landed in my inbox.

The sender was Khloe Bennett.

The subject line contained five words.
