Chapter 13 - The Mother Who Tried to Save Herself.

Judith did not run far.
She checked into a hotel in Connecticut under her maiden name and called Dana the next morning.
She wanted a meeting.
She wanted confidentiality.
Most of all, she wanted me to believe Alexander had manipulated her too.
I agreed to meet only at Dana's office with attorneys present.
Judith arrived carrying a leather tote and wearing dark glasses.
She looked ten years older than she had at my wedding.
"Sophia," she began, "I made terrible mistakes."
I did not answer.
"Alexander told me the transfers were legal tax planning."
Dana slid one of Judith's emails across the table.
GET HER TO MAUI.
Khloe can handle the documents once you are there.
Judith looked away.
"I was repeating what he told me."
"You also created Mercer Strategic Ventures," I said.
"At his request."
"And took fifteen percent."
"I never received anything."
"Because I froze it."
Her mouth tightened.
For a moment, the grieving mother disappeared and the woman from the email returned.
"Your father destroyed my husband."
There it was.
"Your husband lost his company before my father bought anything."
"Thomas took advantage of us."
"Maybe he did."
Judith blinked.
She had expected denial.
I continued.
"That still did not give you the right to spend fourteen years teaching your son that my family owed yours a fortune."
Her eyes sharpened.
"You don't know what it is like to lose everything."
"Neither did you."
I pointed toward the records.
"You had a home."
"You had investments."
"Alexander went to private school."
"You lost status, Judith."
"That is not the same as losing everything."
Her face hardened completely.
"Your father wrote that Alexander was entitled."
I stared at her.
"You knew about the storage file?"
Judith realized her mistake.
Dana leaned forward.
"How?"
Judith said nothing.
Then the door opened.
Alexander walked in.
Every person in the room stood.
Dana looked furious.
"Who authorized this?"
Alexander's attorney appeared behind him.
"My client was invited by Mrs. Mercer."
Judith looked suddenly afraid.
Alexander smiled at his mother.
"You wanted to negotiate without me?"
"Alexander, leave."
"After everything I did for you?"
He looked at me.
"This is perfect."
"The three women who betrayed me in one building."
"No," I said.
"The three women you lied to in three different ways."
He laughed.
"You still think Khloe is on your side?"
"I don't think Khloe is on anyone's side but her own."
That honesty made him pause.
Then he pulled a folder from beneath his arm.
"Fine."
"Here is my offer."
He pushed a settlement agreement across the table.
I would withdraw all fraud allegations.
I would issue a statement describing the forged voting document as an administrative error.
In return, Alexander would waive any claim arising from our wedding and keep quiet about my father.
I read the first page.
Then I tore it in half.
His face went blank.
"You should have read the rest."
"I read enough."
He leaned toward me.
"You are going to regret that."
A voice came from the doorway.
"Mr. Mercer, please step away from the table."
Two investigators stood beside the building's security director.
Dana had already provided the financial evidence to authorities days earlier.
Alexander stared at her.
"You set me up."
Dana's expression did not change.
"You came here voluntarily and brought your own attorney."
One investigator held up paperwork.
"We need to speak with you regarding documents and attempted financial transfers."
Alexander looked at Judith.
"Tell them."
She lowered her eyes.
"Mom."
Judith did not move.
For the first time, Alexander looked truly frightened.
Then Khloe stepped into the hallway behind the investigators.
She held another folder.
Alexander whispered her name.
Khloe answered quietly.
"I gave them everything."
May you like
And that was the moment his confidence finally broke.
