Chapter 8 - My Signature, His Lie.

The document looked convincing.

That was what frightened me most.

My signature sat at the bottom in dark blue ink.

My initials appeared beside every key clause.

The form even carried the correct Moreland Holdings letterhead.

If I had not known better, I might have believed I signed it myself.

"When is this dated?" I asked.

Dana pointed to the top corner.

"The morning after the wedding."

I remembered that morning clearly.

Alexander had brought coffee into the hotel suite while I opened wedding gifts.

He had placed a stack of cards and receipts beside me.

"Sign these so accounting can sort the vendor refunds," he had said.

I had signed several pages without reading every line.

My stomach tightened.

"He could have slipped something into the stack."

Dana shook her head.

"Maybe."

"But?"

"The witness signature is suspicious."

The witness was listed as Khloe Bennett.

I stared at the page.

Khloe had not been at our hotel that morning.

At least, I had not known she was.

"Can this give him control?"

"Not automatically."

"But he can use it to create confusion."

"Exactly."

At nine the next morning, the Moreland board convened an emergency meeting.

I walked into the conference room wearing a charcoal suit and no wedding ring.

Alexander was already there.

He sat beside a lawyer I did not recognize.

Three directors looked uncomfortable.

My uncle Graham looked furious.

He had served on the board since my father founded the company.

"Sophia," he said, "what is happening?"

Alexander answered before I could.

"My wife is going through an emotional crisis."

I sat down across from him.

"Stop calling me your wife."

The room went silent.

Alexander's lawyer cleared his throat.

"Perhaps we should keep personal matters separate from governance."

Dana placed a certified record on the table.

"We would be delighted to."

She slid it toward him.

"Unfortunately, Mr. Mercer's claim to spousal authority is the basis of his governance demand."

The lawyer read the certificate.

His expression changed immediately.

Graham leaned forward.

"What is that?"

I answered.

"Alexander's marriage certificate."

My uncle looked at me.

Then at Alexander.

"Your marriage certificate?"

"Not mine."

I turned the document around.

"Khloe Bennett's."

No one spoke for several seconds.

Alexander finally laughed.

"This is being taken out of context."

Graham looked disgusted.

"Marriage has context now?"

Alexander's attorney whispered something to him.

Alexander ignored it.

"Sophia knew there were legal complications."

"That is false."

"She knew Khloe and I had history."

"History is not the same as a current marriage."

Dana placed the disputed voting authorization beside the certificate.

"And this document is under forensic review."

Alexander leaned back.

"Sophia signed it."

"Then you will have no objection to an ink and metadata analysis."

He looked at his attorney.

This time, the attorney did not look back.

Graham folded his hands.

"Until this is resolved, Alexander has no authority here."

"You cannot do that," Alexander snapped.

"I just did."

The meeting should have ended there.

Instead, the conference-room doors opened.

Khloe walked in.

She was no longer wearing the white sundress from JFK.

She wore black trousers, a plain cream blouse, and no sunglasses.

For the first time, she looked younger than I remembered.

And frightened.

Alexander shot to his feet.

"What are you doing here?"

Khloe ignored him.

She looked directly at me.

"I came to tell the truth."

Alexander's face went white.

Khloe placed a flash drive on the table.

"That signature is not Sophia's."

The room erupted.

Alexander reached for the drive.

Khloe pulled it back.

"Don't touch me."

Then she said the sentence that made even Dana go still.
