Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.

The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,

casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.

Daniel Mercer stood in the doorway between the dining room and the bright modern kitchen, unable to understand why his own home suddenly felt unfamiliar.

His wife, Claire, was on the wooden floor beside the island.

Their six-year-old daughter, Sophie, lay several feet away near a fallen chair.

Neither of them moved.

Daniel's keys slipped from his hand and struck the tile behind him.

"Claire?"

His voice broke before he reached her.

He dropped to his knees and reached for her hand while calling Sophie's name again and again.

Behind him, his mother, Evelyn Mercer, stood near the breakfast table with one hand pressed against her pearl necklace.

Her beige cardigan looked perfectly neat.

Her face did not.

She kept staring at the floor as if there were something there she desperately wanted no one else to notice.

The first responding officer, Nathan Cole, entered with two paramedics and immediately took control of the room.

Daniel was moved back only after the paramedics began working.

He fought every instinct to stay beside Claire, but Officer Cole's calm voice held him in place.

"Give them room, sir."

Daniel covered his mouth with both hands.

A minute felt like an hour.

Then one paramedic called for transport.

Another said they had signs of life from both patients.

Daniel nearly collapsed from the force of that sentence.

They were alive.

Barely, perhaps, but alive.

As the stretcher carrying Sophie passed him, one small object rolled from beneath the dining chair.

It was her tan teddy bear, Maple.

Officer Cole bent down and picked it up.

Daniel watched without knowing why the sight of the toy hurt almost as much as the sight of the ambulance doors closing.

Sophie slept with Maple every night.

She took it to school on difficult days.

She whispered secrets into its stitched ear when she thought adults were too busy to listen.

Officer Cole turned the bear over in his gloved hands.

His expression changed.

"Was this toy repaired recently?"

Daniel blinked.

"No."

Evelyn answered too quickly.

"Children tear things all the time."

Officer Cole looked at her.

Daniel looked at her too.

Evelyn's fingers tightened around the pearls at her throat.

The officer gently separated a small section of uneven stitching along the bear's back.

White stuffing appeared beneath the fabric.

Then something black appeared beneath the stuffing.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Officer Cole reached inside and carefully pulled out a tiny rectangular device.

"We found something inside the little girl's toy."

He placed it on a clean evidence sheet.

The object was smaller than Daniel's car key.

A narrow microphone opening ran across one end.

Officer Cole studied it for only a second.

"It's a hidden audio recorder."

Evelyn made a sound that seemed to escape before she could stop it.

"No."

Her eyes widened.

"That's impossible."

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

His grief changed shape.

It became colder.

Sharper.

"Why is it impossible?"

Evelyn stepped backward.

Officer Cole noticed.

Daniel stood.

"Mom, what happened here?"

"Daniel, please."

"What happened to my family?"

Evelyn shook her head.

Daniel's voice rose despite himself.

"You poisoned my family!"

Officer Cole immediately stepped between them.

"Sir, stay where you are."

Daniel did not move closer.

He only stared at his mother.

Evelyn stared at the recorder sealed inside a clear evidence bag.

And for the first time that night, Daniel understood that she was not afraid of him.

She was afraid of what that little black device had heard.
