Chapter 14 - The Last Copy.
Grant's admission changed the case.
His location remained the only missing piece.
Police traced the blocked call through several routing services before locating the originating device near the riverfront.
Officers searched parking garages, bus terminals, and abandoned commercial lots.
Nothing.
Daniel stayed at the hospital because Claire insisted and because he finally understood that running toward danger would not repair anything.
At noon, Sophie asked for Maple again.
Daniel told her the bear was helping the police.
Sophie considered that seriously.
"Maple is brave."
Daniel smiled.
"So are you."
Claire watched them from the next chair.
Her color had returned slightly.
"What happens to Evelyn?" she asked after Sophie fell asleep.
Daniel looked out the window.
"I don't know."
Claire waited.
Daniel continued.
"She helped them pressure you."
"Yes."
"She gave Grant access to the cameras."
"Yes."
"She hid documents from me for years."
Claire nodded.
"And she tried to stop him when she realized what he had done."
Daniel looked at her.
"That doesn't erase the rest."
"I didn't say it did."
Claire reached for his hand.
"Forgiveness and access are not the same thing."
Daniel understood exactly what she meant.
He could someday stop carrying hatred without ever returning Evelyn to the center of their family.
At 1:27 p.m., Officer Cole called.
Grant had been found.
A patrol officer recognized him leaving a rented storage facility under another name.
He attempted to drive away but stopped when police vehicles blocked the exit.
No one was injured.
Grant was taken into custody.
Inside the storage unit, investigators found printed trust documents, copied company records, several phones, and a small portable safe.
The safe contained the last copy Grant had repeatedly referenced.
It was not another trust document.
It was a video file.
The recording came from an old security camera inside Victor Shaw's office.
Grant had copied it months earlier.
The footage showed Victor and Evelyn discussing the altered trust after Daniel's father's death.
Daniel watched only because Claire asked to watch with him.
Evelyn sat across from Victor in the video, visibly tense.
"Arthur wanted Sophie protected," Evelyn said.
Victor replied, "Arthur is gone."
"Daniel will never agree to this."
"Then Daniel doesn't need to know."
Evelyn looked at the documents.
"What you're asking me to do is wrong."
Victor leaned forward.
"I'm asking you to preserve what your husband built."
For several seconds, Evelyn said nothing.
Then she signed.
Daniel paused the recording.
Claire squeezed his hand.
The betrayal was no longer theoretical.
It had a date.
A room.
A signature.
Daniel resumed the video.
After Evelyn left, Grant entered Victor's office from a side door.
He had apparently been listening.
Victor looked annoyed.
"You weren't supposed to hear that."
Grant smiled.
"Good thing I did."
The video ended.
Daniel finally understood the structure of the entire disaster.
Victor created the deception.
Evelyn accepted it because she believed control mattered more than honesty.
Grant discovered it and turned the secret into leverage.
Years later, when Claire challenged the altered trust, all three became trapped by the lie they had chosen to protect.
Grant escalated beyond what Evelyn expected.
But Evelyn had built the road he used.
Officer Cole asked Daniel whether he wanted to make a formal statement that afternoon.
Daniel looked at Claire.
Then at Sophie.
"Yes."
