Chapter 9 - Box 214.
The bank opened at nine the next morning.
Detectives were waiting with the necessary legal authority before the first customers entered.
Daniel remained at the hospital because Claire had finally awakened.
Her eyes opened slowly.
For several seconds, she looked at him without recognition.
Then tears appeared.
"Sophie?"
Daniel leaned close.
"She's stable."
Claire shut her eyes in relief.
"She drank the lemonade."
"I know."
Claire looked at him again.
"Your mother?"
Daniel hesitated.
"She's talking to police."
Claire's expression hardened despite her weakness.
"She brought Grant there."
"I know that too."
Daniel squeezed her hand.
"The recorder worked."
For the first time, Claire looked surprised.
"Maple?"
"Yes."
A faint, exhausted smile crossed her face.
"Sophie thought she was a detective."
Daniel nearly laughed and cried at the same time.
Claire explained that she had bought the recorder two weeks earlier after finding altered trust pages in Evelyn's study.
She did not want to accuse anyone without proof.
She hid the device inside Maple because Sophie carried the bear everywhere and Evelyn never paid attention to children's toys.
"I hated doing it," Claire whispered.
"But I needed them to say what they were doing."
Daniel lowered his head.
"You should have told me."
"Would you have believed me?"
The question landed harder than an accusation.
Daniel wanted to say yes.
He could not answer quickly enough.
Claire saw the truth in his silence.
"That's why I needed proof."
Daniel nodded.
"You shouldn't have needed proof for me."
His phone buzzed.
Officer Cole had sent a message asking him to call when Claire was resting.
Daniel stepped into the hallway.
The bank box had been opened.
Inside were the original Mercer trust documents, his father's handwritten letter, and financial records showing payments from a Mercer holding company to Victor Shaw.
The trust documents proved something Daniel had never known.
His father had amended the family structure years earlier to guarantee Sophie a protected share regardless of Daniel's marital status.
The amendment Evelyn and Grant had been pushing would reverse that protection.
Daniel felt sick.
"Why would my mother hide the original?"
Cole answered carefully.
"Because the version used after your father's death appears to be different."
"Different how?"
"Several pages were substituted."
Daniel leaned against the wall.
"You're saying the trust was altered?"
"We're saying experts need to examine it."
Then Cole told him about the letter.
It was addressed to Daniel.
His father wrote that he had become concerned about financial pressure from Evelyn, Grant, and Shaw.
He warned Daniel never to surrender voting control without independent legal review.
The final paragraph was personal.
Daniel asked Cole to read it.
Cole hesitated, then did.
Your mother loves this family, but sometimes she confuses protecting it with owning it.
Do not let loyalty become blindness.
Daniel looked through the window at Claire.
His father had understood Evelyn years before Daniel did.
Then Cole said the financial records contained another surprise.
Victor Shaw had transferred a large payment to Grant three days before the dinner.
The description on the payment was only two words.
"Final correction."
Daniel repeated them.
"What does that mean?"
Cole answered.
"We think Grant may know."
"If you can find him."
Cole paused.
"We found his car."
Daniel straightened.
"Where?"
"At Victor Shaw's office."
