Chapter 8 - Evelyn's Version.

Evelyn sat alone in an interview room with her pearl necklace removed and sealed in a property envelope.
Daniel watched through the observation window from the hall.
He had never seen his mother look smaller.
He did not mistake smallness for innocence.
Detective Ramirez entered first.
Officer Cole remained outside with Daniel.
"You don't have to watch this," Cole said.
"Yes, I do."
Ramirez began with a simple question.
"Why did you help Grant get into the house?"
Evelyn stared at the table.
"Because I believed Claire was destroying Daniel's future."
Daniel flinched.
Ramirez did not.
"How?"
"She opposed the trust amendment."
"The amendment that would reduce her daughter's future rights?"
Evelyn's eyes lifted.
"It would protect the company from fragmentation."
Daniel whispered through clenched teeth.
"Sophie is six."
Cole said nothing.
Inside the room, Ramirez continued.
"Did Claire agree with your interpretation?"
"No."
"So you pressured her."
Evelyn's jaw tightened.
"I tried to make her understand."
"By arriving with Grant after he claimed he had canceled?"
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"Yes."
"By disabling security cameras?"
"Grant said he didn't want Daniel watching the confrontation later."
"And you accepted that?"
"I was angry."
Ramirez leaned back.
"Anger doesn't delete ten minutes of video by itself."
Evelyn looked toward the mirrored glass.
Daniel knew she could not see him.
Still, it felt as if she were staring straight at him.
"I gave Grant the administrator password," she admitted.
Daniel's shoulders dropped.
There it was.
Not innocence.
Not misunderstanding.
Participation.
Ramirez asked about the drink.
Evelyn's face changed.
"I saw him near the pitcher."
"And?"
"I assumed he was adding lemon syrup."
"Why?"
"Because he told me he was."
Ramirez let silence stretch.
Evelyn finally whispered.
"I should have checked."
"When did you realize something was wrong?"
"Claire asked him what he had done."
"Then what?"
"Grant said they would only become sleepy."
"And you believed him?"
"No."
Evelyn's voice cracked.
"Not after I saw Sophie stumble."
Daniel gripped the edge of the window frame.
Evelyn said she found Maple near the child and remembered Claire carrying it from room to room all evening.
The bear felt unusually firm.
She opened the seam and found the recorder.
Grant demanded that she destroy it.
She refused.
"Why?" Ramirez asked.
Evelyn swallowed.
"Because I suddenly understood that I might need it too."
The answer was selfish enough to sound true.
She had not saved the evidence for Claire.
She had saved it because Grant frightened her.
"Why didn't you call emergency services immediately?"
Evelyn's face collapsed.
"Grant took my phone."
"Your phone records show a call at 7:34."
"From him."
"To whom?"
Evelyn hesitated.
Ramirez's voice sharpened.
"To whom?"
"A lawyer named Victor Shaw."
Cole straightened beside Daniel.
Daniel knew the name.
Victor Shaw had handled his father's estate.
Evelyn continued.
"Grant said Shaw could fix everything."
"What did Shaw tell him?"
"I only heard Grant's side."
"Which was?"
Evelyn looked at the table.
"He said, 'Then get the key before Daniel gets home.'"
Daniel thought of the brass key from the pantry.
Box 214.
Ramirez placed a photograph of it before Evelyn.
"This key?"
Evelyn began to cry.
"Yes."
Ramirez leaned forward.
"What is in that box?"
Evelyn whispered the answer.
"The original trust."

Then she added the sentence that changed the entire investigation.
"And a letter Daniel's father wrote the week before he died."
