Chapter 7 - The Second Voice.

The second review of the audio took nearly six hours.
Investigators cleaned the background noise without altering the original file.
By evening, the muffled male voice was clearer.
Daniel sat across from Officer Cole in a small conference room at the precinct.
A detective named Lena Ramirez joined them.
She had spent the afternoon building a timeline from phone records, traffic cameras, and the house security logs.
"We believe Grant entered through the mudroom at 7:22," Ramirez said.
"The camera was already disabled."
"By Grant?" Daniel asked.
"His account was used."
Daniel clenched his jaw.
Ramirez continued.
"At 7:29, Evelyn's phone connected to the kitchen speaker system."
"Why does that matter?"
"Because it places her in the kitchen during the missing camera window."
Daniel stared at the timeline.
His mother had told police she was setting the table in the dining room.
Another lie.
Cole played the enhanced recording.
Claire spoke first.
"I'm not signing anything."
Evelyn answered.
"Lower your voice."
Then Grant's voice came through clearly.
"We didn't come here to argue."
Daniel closed his eyes.
It was Grant.
There was no longer any doubt.
Claire replied.
"You weren't invited after you canceled."
Grant gave a short laugh.
"Plans changed."
Paper rustled.
Evelyn said, "Just sign the amendment and this family can move forward."
Claire answered immediately.
"No."
A glass touched the counter.
Grant spoke again.
"Then we'll make tonight persuasive."
Daniel leaned toward the speaker.
"What does that mean?"
Ramirez raised one hand.
"Keep listening."
Claire's voice sharpened.
"What did you put in that pitcher?"
Silence followed.
Then Evelyn spoke with sudden alarm.
"Grant, what did you do?"
The room around Daniel seemed to disappear.
Grant answered.
"Relax. They'll sleep."
Evelyn's voice rose.
"That wasn't the plan."
"The plan wasn't working."
A chair scraped hard across the floor.
Claire shouted Sophie's name.
Then came movement, footsteps, and fabric rubbing against the recorder.
Evelyn said something barely audible.
Ramirez increased the volume.
"Get that bear away from here."
Daniel looked at Cole.
That was why Evelyn's adhesive was on Maple.
She had found the recorder.
She had opened the toy.
But the recording continued after that moment.
Daniel frowned.
"If she found it, why put it back?"
Cole resumed the audio.
Grant spoke closer to the microphone.
"Destroy it."
Evelyn answered.
"No."
"What?"
"I said no."
Grant's tone changed.
"Evelyn."
"You went too far."
There was a struggle for the toy, brief and chaotic but not clearly captured.
Then a door slammed.
The next five minutes contained only distant sounds.
Finally, Evelyn's voice returned.
She sounded breathless.
"Claire, stay with me."
Daniel froze.
The words did not sound like the woman he had confronted in the kitchen.
They sounded frightened.
Then Evelyn said another sentence.
"Sophie, sweetheart, don't drink any more."
The recording ended.
Daniel stared at the table.
His mother had lied.
She had pressured Claire.
She had helped Grant enter the house.
She had participated in something ugly enough that Claire felt she needed secret proof.
But the recording suggested Evelyn had not expected Grant to put anything in the drink.
Daniel felt no relief.
Only a different kind of fury.
"She started the fire and panicked when it got hot."
Cole did not disagree.
Ramirez slid a photograph across the table.
It showed Grant withdrawing cash from an ATM forty miles away less than an hour earlier.
He was still nearby.
Then Cole's phone rang.
He listened for ten seconds and looked directly at Daniel.
"Your mother just walked into the station."
Daniel stood.
"To confess?"
May you like
Cole's expression gave nothing away.
"She says she knows where Grant is going."
