Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.

The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,

casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.

Only twenty minutes earlier, the ballroom had been full of laughter, champagne, and relatives taking pictures beside the white baptism flowers.

Now every face had turned toward Jennifer.

She stood at the glass table with a dark leather folder tucked beneath one arm, her expression calmer than anyone expected.

Daniel stood beside her in his charcoal suit, still wearing the polished smile he had used all afternoon to greet coworkers and distant cousins.

That smile disappeared when Jennifer opened the folder.

She placed the unpaid catering invoice for Lily's baptism on the glass.

Then she placed a bank statement beside it.

Her father-in-law slowly lowered his crystal glass.

Patricia leaned forward as if she had not heard correctly.

Jennifer touched one line on the statement with the tip of her finger.

"Fifteen thousand, two hundred eighty dollars transferred to Chloe Hart."

Daniel did not look at the paper.

He looked at Jennifer.

His jaw tightened.

"This isn't the time for one of your misunderstandings."

Jennifer gave him a small, almost tired smile.

"I agree."

She slid the statement toward the center of the table so everyone could see it.

"That's why I waited until I understood it."

A cousin near the back quietly lowered her phone.

The musicians had already stopped playing.

The only sound in the room was the soft clink of ice inside Daniel's father's glass.

Daniel took one step closer.

"Where did you get that?"

Jennifer opened the folder again.

"From the account that was supposed to pay Lily's baptism expenses."

Patricia's face lost color.

"Daniel, what is she talking about?"

Daniel ignored his mother.

"Jennifer, close the folder."

The command came out low and controlled, the way he spoke when he expected a room to obey him.

Jennifer did not move.

For six years, she had watched that tone end arguments before they began.

It had worked in restaurants, at family dinners, and in their own kitchen.

Tonight, it sounded smaller than she remembered.

She removed a second page.

It was another transfer.

The same recipient appeared at the top.

Chloe Hart.

This one was for $4,900.

Then came another for $2,250.

Daniel's father stared at his son.

"How many are there?"

Jennifer answered without looking away from Daniel.

"Enough that Lily's vendors started calling me for money Daniel said had already been paid."

Daniel finally glanced around the ballroom.

He seemed to notice for the first time that his coworkers were watching.

His sister was watching.

His parents were watching.

The priest who had blessed Lily that morning had already left, but nearly everyone else remained.

Daniel reached for the top statement.

Jennifer placed her hand over it first.

"Don't."

His eyes narrowed.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

Jennifer's voice stayed even.

"Actually, Daniel, that's the first thing I've been certain about all week."

She reached back into the folder.

This time, she pulled out a printed screenshot.

Daniel recognized it before anyone else could read the first line.

His face changed.

And Jennifer knew the evening had finally begun.
