Chapter 14 - If Tonight Goes Wrong.

Chloe opened the scheduled email with trembling hands.
Daniel moved toward her.
"Delete that."
Chloe stepped behind Patricia.
"No."
Jennifer looked at Daniel.
"You scheduled an email?"
He said nothing.
Chloe began reading silently.
Her eyes moved faster with every line.
Then she looked at Jennifer.
"He says the money wasn't only for the condo."
Daniel's father took a slow breath.
"What else?"
Chloe handed the phone to Jennifer.
The email was written in the careful tone Daniel used when he wanted panic to sound like planning.
He told Chloe that if Jennifer confronted him publicly, Chloe should avoid the hotel and wait for instructions.
He claimed there was "a separate financial issue" Jennifer might discover.
He promised Chloe that it did not involve her or Noah.
Then came the line that made Jennifer's stomach tighten.
"The education account may need to be restored before anyone notices."
Jennifer read it twice.
"What education account?"
Richard's face changed immediately.
"Lily's college account."
Daniel looked at his father.
"Dad."
Richard ignored him.
When Lily was born, Richard and Patricia had opened a custodial education account and contributed every birthday.
Jennifer's parents contributed too.
Daniel managed the account because he worked in finance and everyone trusted him with paperwork.
Jennifer had rarely checked it.
She had no reason to.
Until now.
Richard pulled out his phone and opened the family investment portal.
He entered the account number from an old statement saved in his email.
The login no longer worked.
"Password was changed," he said.
Daniel looked exhausted.
"You're making this sound worse than it is."
Jennifer stared at him.
"That sentence has not helped you once tonight."
Richard called the brokerage's after-hours security number.
He kept the conversation brief and asked only whether the account remained open and whether any recent distribution request was pending.
Because he was a listed contributor but not the custodian, the representative would not provide details.
But one thing could be confirmed.
A distribution request had been initiated.
Richard ended the call.
"How much?" Patricia asked.
"They wouldn't tell me."
Jennifer looked at Daniel.
"How much?"
He rubbed his forehead.
"I borrowed from it."
The room seemed to lose sound.
Jennifer took one step back.
"You borrowed from Lily's future?"
"I was replacing it."
"With what?"
Daniel did not answer.
Jennifer understood the pattern now.
The next bonus.
The next reimbursement.
The next loan.
The next hidden transfer.
Every hole was supposed to be covered by money that had not arrived yet.
Daniel had not been managing two lives.
He had been moving debt and promises between them, hoping no one would compare dates.
Chloe sat down slowly.
"Was Noah's medical account real?"
Daniel looked at her.
Her face fell before he answered.
Jennifer realized Chloe had discovered her own missing money at the same moment.
"Daniel," Chloe said.
"You told me you opened an account for him."
He looked away.
That was enough.
Patricia's eyes filled again.
Richard's expression became completely still.
Jennifer closed her eyes for one second.
Then she opened the folder one last time.
There was only one document left inside.
It was not a bank statement.
It was not a hotel contract.
It was the petition Susan had prepared that morning, ready to file if Jennifer decided the truth was as bad as the records suggested.
May you like
Daniel recognized the first page.
And for the first time that night, he stopped trying to explain.
