Chapter 10 - The Story Daniel Sold Everyone.

The ballroom no longer felt like a celebration hall.
It felt like a room full of witnesses comparing different versions of the same man.
Mark did not accuse Daniel of stealing.
He simply showed Richard a reimbursement request.
The request listed a Chicago hotel.
The attached credit-card charge came from the downtown hotel where Noah's baptism banquet had been booked.
Daniel's father looked at the screen for a long time.
"Did you submit this?"
Daniel's answer came too quickly.
"My assistant handles reimbursements."
Mark shook his head.
"You approved it personally."
Daniel turned on him.
"You don't know the context."
Jennifer almost felt sorry for the phrase.
It had worked hard all evening.
Chloe folded her arms.
"Was there ever a conference in Chicago?"
Daniel ignored her.
Richard handed the phone back to Mark.
"We'll review it Monday."
He looked at the other employees.
"No one is discussing company business here any further."
Jennifer appreciated the boundary.
She had come to expose what Daniel had done to their family, not stage a corporate investigation in a ballroom.
But the damage to his credibility was already complete.
Daniel leaned toward Jennifer.
"Happy now?"
The question stunned her more than the lies.
"You think I wanted this?"
"You wanted an audience."
Jennifer looked around the room.
"I wanted witnesses because every time I questioned you in private, you convinced me I had remembered something wrong."
Daniel's expression shifted.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that she had been planning not just the reveal, but the conditions around it.
Jennifer continued.
"When the florist called, you said I forgot to send the payment."
She lifted one finger.
"When the hotel called, you said my mother added guests."
A second finger.
"When I asked about Chloe's transfer, you said she was a client."
A third.
"When I asked why you were gone overnight, you said your father sent you to Chicago."
Richard's face hardened.
Jennifer lowered her hand.
"I needed one room where you couldn't rewrite the story for each person."
Patricia sat very still.
Then she spoke.
"He did that to me too."
Everyone turned toward her.
Daniel looked suddenly nervous.
Patricia opened her purse.
"Three months ago, he asked me to meet a woman at the hotel restaurant."
Chloe's face changed.
"You met me."
Patricia stared at her.
Recognition arrived slowly.
"You were the event planner."
Chloe shook her head.
"That's what Daniel told you?"
Patricia looked at her son.
Her face was no longer pale.
It was furious.
"You introduced the mother of your child to me as an event planner."
Daniel looked away.
Chloe covered her mouth in disbelief.
"He told me you were a business investor."
Patricia's eyes widened.
Jennifer felt the room tilt again.
Daniel had brought his mother and Chloe together, trusting each would believe a different story.
Patricia pulled a folded receipt from her purse.
"He asked me to pay a hotel deposit that day."
She placed it beside the other evidence.
Jennifer looked at the amount.
It matched the first deposit on Noah's banquet.

Patricia had unknowingly financed the secret celebration before she ever loaned Daniel the additional twelve thousand.
And Daniel had known exactly what he was doing.
