Chapter 11 - Patricia's Receipt.

Patricia's hand remained on the receipt.
For years, she had defended Daniel automatically.
If he forgot an anniversary, he was busy.
If he arrived late to dinner, his work mattered.
If Jennifer complained that he was distant, Patricia suggested marriage required patience.
Now the same woman stared at her son as if every excuse had been returned to her at once.
"You let me sit with her," Patricia said.
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
"Mom, I was trying to manage a difficult situation."
"You made me part of it."
Her voice shook.
"You made me look that woman in the eye while both of us believed different lies."
Chloe looked down.
"I thought you knew about me."
Patricia's expression softened toward her.
"I didn't even know who you were."
Jennifer watched the exchange with complicated relief.
For days, she had feared the two women might turn on each other once they were in the same room.
Daniel had depended on exactly that kind of conflict.
Instead, each new fact moved responsibility back toward him.
Daniel pointed at Jennifer's folder.
"You planned this entire performance."
Jennifer closed the folder halfway.
"I planned to show the truth once."
"At my daughter's baptism."
Jennifer's face changed.
"Our daughter's baptism."
The correction was small, but Daniel heard it.
"And I didn't choose tonight because I wanted drama," Jennifer continued.
"I chose tonight because you scheduled another transfer for tomorrow morning."
Daniel went still.
Patricia looked confused.
Jennifer removed a bank notice she had not yet shown.
It confirmed a pending automatic transfer of $60,000 from a home-equity credit line.
The transfer had been set up twelve days earlier.
Richard leaned over the page.
"Home equity?"
Jennifer nodded.
The house belonged to Jennifer and Daniel jointly.
Part of the down payment had come from Jennifer's grandmother's estate.
Daniel had told Jennifer the credit line paperwork was only an emergency backup and would remain unused.
She had signed after reviewing a general authorization months earlier.
What she did not know was that Daniel later scheduled a draw against it.
The bank had notified her because the amount exceeded a security threshold.
That alert was what first pushed her to review the other transactions.
"Where was the sixty thousand going?" Richard asked.
Daniel did not answer.
Chloe looked suddenly confused.
"He told me he was buying a condo."
Jennifer turned toward her.
"What condo?"
Chloe reached for her phone.
Daniel took a step forward.
"Chloe, stop talking."
She looked at him.
"No."
One word.
No hesitation.
She opened a photo and showed Jennifer a real-estate listing.
It was a two-bedroom condo less than a mile from Chloe's apartment.
Daniel had sent it to her with a message.
"A place for Noah when he gets older."
Jennifer recognized the listed purchase deposit.
It was almost exactly sixty thousand dollars.
Her family home had been scheduled to help fund Daniel's separate future.

The transfer was due at 9:00 the next morning.
And Daniel had expected Jennifer to discover it only after the money was gone.
