Chapter 7 - Chloe at the Door.

Every head in the ballroom turned toward Chloe.
For one strange second, Jennifer saw the woman not as a threat, but as someone who looked just as exhausted as she felt.
Chloe was younger than Jennifer had imagined from the messages.
Her hair was pulled into a low ponytail.
She wore no jewelry except a thin silver chain.
The pale blue envelope trembled slightly in her hand.
Daniel moved first.
"Chloe, leave."
The command cracked across the room.
Chloe stopped near the doorway.
Jennifer watched her expression change.
Fear became anger.
Not loud anger.
The kind that made a person stand straighter.
"You told me she knew," Chloe said.
Daniel glanced around at the guests.
"This isn't the place."
Chloe gave a short, humorless laugh.
"Apparently that's your favorite sentence."
Jennifer almost smiled despite herself.
Patricia stared between the two women.
"You didn't know he was still married?"
Chloe looked at Jennifer before answering.
"He told me they were legally separated."
Daniel interrupted.
"I told you it was complicated."
Chloe's eyes flashed.
"You told me she lived in the guest room."
Jennifer's eyebrows lifted.
Several relatives shifted uncomfortably.
Chloe continued.
"You told me the only reason the divorce wasn't filed was because Lily had trouble adjusting."
Jennifer felt something cold move through her chest.
Daniel had used Lily not only as an excuse to her.
He had used Lily as an excuse to Chloe.
"He also told me Jennifer controlled all the money," Chloe said.
Jennifer looked at Daniel.
"That's new."
Daniel's voice hardened.
"She's trying to protect herself."
Chloe stepped toward the glass table.
"I'm trying to protect my son."
She placed the blue envelope beside Jennifer's folder.
"And I'm done letting you use him as cover."
Daniel stared at the envelope.
Jennifer recognized the hotel logo in one corner.
"What's inside?" she asked.
Chloe took a breath.
"The original banquet estimate."
She opened the envelope herself.
The estimate showed that Noah's baptism banquet had been booked months before Lily's event.
Daniel had not accidentally mixed expenses.
He had instructed the hotel to merge deposits after Jennifer agreed to use a connected venue for Lily's extended-family dinner.
A handwritten note appeared beside the payment instructions.
"D.M. requested consolidated billing."
Daniel's father read it twice.
"You planned this before Lily's baptism was even scheduled."
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"I was going to replace the money."
Jennifer's gaze sharpened.
"When?"
"After my bonus."
His father answered before Jennifer could.
"You didn't earn a bonus last quarter."
Silence fell again.
Daniel looked at him.
That single statement opened another door.
Jennifer remembered the expensive watch Daniel had bought in April.
The weekend trip he said was covered by points.
The new lease he claimed the company subsidized.
None of those details mattered by themselves.
Together, they suddenly looked like a pattern.
Chloe removed one more paper from the envelope.
"There's something else."
Daniel's head snapped toward her.
"Don't."
Chloe looked at Jennifer.
"He asked me to sign this yesterday."
She unfolded a draft agreement.
At the top were the words "Confidential Financial Arrangement."
Jennifer read the first paragraph.
Then she looked at Daniel.

The document offered Chloe money in exchange for silence.
And the money was supposed to come from an account Jennifer did not know existed.
