Chapter 1 - The Fall and The Card.

The courtyard below the Vale mansion looked almost peaceful beneath the gray afternoon sky.

Soft rain had stopped only minutes earlier, leaving the white stone balcony slick and shining.

Claire Vale stood three feet from the railing with blood already running from a cut near her eyebrow.

Her husband, Adrian, blocked the doorway behind her.

His navy suit was immaculate except for one torn cuff where Claire had grabbed him during their argument.

Evelyn Vale stood beside the open French doors in a cream dress and pearls, looking more irritated than frightened.

Claire held a smartphone in a dark blue case against her chest.

The phone contained photographs, bank transfers, recorded calls, and one video that Adrian had sworn did not exist.

"Give me the phone," Adrian said.

Claire shook her head.

"You forged my signature and stole twenty-two million dollars from the Bennett Trust."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

"I heard your mother admit it."

Evelyn gave a small, humorless smile.

"Then you heard a private family conversation and misunderstood it."

Claire looked at the woman who had spent four years teaching her how to smile for cameras and ignore insults at charity dinners.

For the first time, she saw no mask at all.

Only contempt.

Claire moved sideways toward the staircase.

Adrian moved with her.

"You are not leaving this house with that phone."

"The police will decide what happens next."

The word police changed something in his face.

The anger disappeared for half a heartbeat.

Fear replaced it.

Then his hand struck her shoulder.

Claire stumbled backward.

She caught the stone railing with one palm and almost recovered.

Adrian grabbed her wrist as if he meant to save her.

For one desperate second, Claire believed he had changed his mind.

Then he leaned close enough for her to smell the coffee on his breath.

"You should have stayed quiet," he whispered.

He peeled her fingers away from the railing.

Claire fell.

The mansion, the balcony, and Adrian's face spun above her in a blur of white stone and dark blue fabric.

She struck the edge of a trimmed hedge, twisted, and crashed onto the wet pavement beside the fountain.

Pain exploded through her ribs and left shoulder.

Her phone landed a few feet away.

The screen shattered with a sharp crack.

Claire could not breathe.

She could not feel two fingers on her left hand.

Water from the fountain sprayed across her black clothes as she tried to move.

High above, Adrian stepped to the railing and adjusted his suit jacket.

Evelyn joined him.

She looked down at Claire the way someone might inspect a broken glass.

"She deserved it," Evelyn said.

Her voice carried clearly across the courtyard.

"The evidence is gone. Even if you are not dead, you can't do anything."

Claire stared at the ruined phone.

Adrian followed her gaze and smiled.

That smile gave Claire the strength to move her right hand.

She reached beneath the torn edge of her sleeve.

Two hours earlier, she had removed the phone's memory card and hidden it against her wrist with a strip of medical tape.

She pinched the tiny black card between two trembling fingers and lifted it toward the balcony.

Adrian stopped smiling.

Evelyn's expression hardened.

Claire tasted blood and forced out two words.

"Really? Watch me."

A siren sounded beyond the iron gates.

Adrian looked toward the driveway.

Evelyn looked at her son.

May you like

And Claire understood from their faces that they had not expected anyone to come.

Someone else had called the police before she fell.
