Chapter 14 - The Last Lie.

Claire thought immediately of her trust.

Brooks thought of the company.

Ortiz thought of the hidden records.

All three were wrong.

Adrian asked to speak directly to Claire.

She refused at first.

Then he said one word through the intercom.

"Marrow."

Claire entered the interview room.

Adrian sat with one arm immobilized and two officers behind him.

"What is Marrow?" she asked.

"A codename your father used."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"For what?"

Adrian looked exhausted.

"Not money. Not evidence. A person."

Claire said nothing.

"Your father had a second child."

The room seemed to lose sound.

Claire stared at him.

"No."

"A son. Older than you."

"My father would have told me."

"He didn't know until shortly before he died."

Adrian explained that Thomas Bennett had donated genetic material during cancer treatment years earlier.

A private fertility clinic had illegally used it in an embryo program.

The clinic was later purchased through a Vale shell company.

One resulting child, now an adult, had discovered the connection and contacted Thomas.

Thomas called him Marrow in his notes because DNA was the only proof linking them.

Claire felt anger rise again.

"What does this have to do with the balcony?"

"Your father transferred ownership of a dormant holding company to both biological children."

Adrian swallowed.

"That company owns the voting rights Evelyn needs to keep control of Vale Holdings."

Claire understood slowly.

Her signature alone was not enough.

Evelyn needed the unknown brother too.

"Where is he?"

Adrian looked toward the camera.

"Mason knows."

Claire turned.

Mason had been listening from the observation room.

He did not deny it.

Claire walked out and faced him.

"Who is Marrow?"

Mason's eyes filled with shame.

"Me."

Claire could not speak.

He took an old DNA report from his jacket.

Thomas Bennett was listed as a 99.9 percent paternal match.

Mason had been thirty-two when he learned the truth.

He had already worked security for the Vales for years.

Thomas had confronted the clinic, discovered Vale ownership, and then uncovered Evelyn's wider financial network.

Everything had started from that search.

Claire looked at the man she had blamed for silence and cowardice.

"You're my brother."

"Half brother."

"You knew when I married Adrian?"

"Yes."

"And you said nothing."

Mason's voice cracked.

"Thomas made me promise not to tell you unless I could prove the rest."

Claire laughed once, without humor.

"Everyone protected me by lying to me."

Ortiz stepped into the hallway.

"We have a bigger problem."

Evelyn's attorneys had filed emergency documents ninety minutes after Claire's fall.

They declared Claire temporarily incapacitated and transferred her voting authority through a marital proxy to Adrian.

At the same time, forged documents declared Mason dead after his abandoned car was found near the river.

With Claire incapacitated and Mason legally presumed dead, Evelyn had seized control of the holding company.

The balcony had not been only attempted murder.

It had been a timed corporate coup.

Brooks checked the filing system.

The transfer was scheduled to become irreversible at midnight under a private restructuring agreement.

It was eleven-twenty-three.

Claire looked at Mason.

"How do we stop it?"

Mason handed her the DNA report.

"We walk into the Vale boardroom alive."

The headquarters was thirty minutes away.

May you like

They had thirty-seven minutes.

And Evelyn, from federal custody, was already calling someone inside the building.
