Chapter 10 - The Dead Man's Ledger.

Two federal agents moved toward Claire.
Ortiz stepped between them.
"On what authority?"
Elena Brooks produced a warrant.
"Sealed federal order."
Claire looked at the signature.
The judge's name meant nothing to her.
Mason whispered that the judge had served on a Vale Foundation board for six years.
Adrian smiled for the first time that night.
Evelyn looked almost bored.
Claire realized the gala had become exactly the trap Evelyn wanted.
Not a trap for Claire's body.
A trap for her credibility.
Brooks announced that the files on the memory card had been obtained illegally and manipulated.
She claimed Claire had attempted to extort Vale Holdings after a marital dispute.
Several reporters lowered their cameras.
The story was changing in real time.
Claire had one advantage left.
The automatic release.
Her ten-minute timer expired.
Every screen in the ballroom flickered again.
A different file opened.
Claire had not selected it.
Neither had Mason.
A handwritten ledger appeared, page after page.
At the top was a name Claire had not seen in years.
RICHARD VALE.
The room went quiet.
A recorded voice followed.
Richard Vale's voice.
"If you're hearing this, Evelyn found out Thomas and I were working together."
Evelyn's face changed for the first time.
Not anger.
Fear.
Richard continued.
"The shell companies are not the real business. The real business is influence. Judges, officers, inspectors, prosecutors, and contractors were paid through Mercer Response."
Elena Brooks stepped backward.
Her eyes moved toward Evelyn.
Richard's recording named her.
"Assistant prosecutor Elena Brooks received no money. Evelyn believes she did because I used Brooks's name as a false ledger entry to hide payments to Judge Malcolm Reed."
Brooks looked stunned.
Claire understood immediately.
Evelyn had believed Brooks belonged to her system because Richard had planted her name in the books.
Brooks had pretended to cooperate to learn how deep the network went.
The arrest order against Claire was theater.
Brooks turned toward the two agents.
"Take Adrian Vale into custody."
Adrian's smile vanished.
"What?"
"Conspiracy to commit attempted murder, wire fraud, obstruction, and financial crimes pending further charges."
The agents seized him.
Evelyn did not move.
Brooks faced her.
"Evelyn Vale, you are also under arrest."
Evelyn laughed softly.
"No, I'm not."
The ballroom lights went out.
Someone screamed.
Claire heard chairs scrape and glass break.
Emergency lights came on ten seconds later.
Adrian was still in custody.
Brooks was still onstage.
Evelyn was gone.
A service door behind the curtains stood open.
Mason ran through it.
Claire followed despite Ortiz shouting after her.
The passage led into the hotel kitchen.
At the far end, a black sedan sped away from the loading dock.
Mason cursed.
Claire looked down and saw a pearl on the concrete floor.
Evelyn had torn her necklace while escaping.
Beside the pearl was a folded piece of paper.
Claire opened it.
The message was handwritten.
YOUR FATHER LEFT ONE MORE COPY.
BE AT THE VALE HOUSE BEFORE MIDNIGHT IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHERE HE DIED.
Claire stared at the words.
May you like
Her father had died on a mountain road fifty miles away.
Unless that had been another lie.
