Chapter 9 - The Gala Trap.

The photograph of Emma Ortiz was fake in one detail and real in another.
The child had been photographed months earlier during a school event.
The timestamp had been altered.
The reflection of Adrian, however, came from a different image layered into the glass.
Evelyn wanted Ortiz frightened enough to destroy evidence without actually kidnapping a police officer's daughter.
"She thinks fear is cheaper than violence," Claire said.
Mason gave her a grim look.
"Only when fear works."
The first reporter received Claire's encrypted drive the next morning.
He called from New York and asked for forty-eight hours to verify the files.
Claire gave him twelve.
That evening, Vale Holdings was scheduled to host its annual Children's Mercy Gala at the Grand Bellhaven Hotel.
Nearly six hundred donors, executives, judges, and politicians would attend.
Adrian and Evelyn had refused to cancel it.
They wanted the city to see them smiling.
Claire decided to give them an audience.
Ortiz objected immediately.
"You cannot walk into that ballroom."
"That's exactly why I have to."
Mason understood before Ortiz did.
"If Evelyn attacks her in public, she exposes herself."
"And if she doesn't?" Ortiz asked.
Claire picked up the black memory card.
"Then I expose her."
They prepared three simultaneous releases of the evidence.
If Claire failed to send a code every ten minutes, the files would go public automatically.
At eight-forty, Claire entered the hotel wearing a black dress beneath a long coat.
Her bruises were still visible.
The room went silent almost immediately.
Adrian stood onstage beside Evelyn.
For one second, he looked genuinely shocked.
Then he recovered.
"Claire."
She walked toward the stage.
Cameras turned with her.
Whispers spread across the ballroom.
Evelyn stepped to the microphone.
"My dear, you should be resting."
Claire stopped ten feet from the stage.
"I rested enough while you told the city I tried to kill myself."
The crowd shifted.
Adrian descended the stairs.
"Please don't do this here."
"You mean in front of witnesses?"
His eyes hardened.
Claire raised the memory card.
Gasps moved through the room.
Evelyn did not look at the card.
She looked toward the ballroom doors.
Four security guards entered.
Mason appeared behind them.
For a terrifying second, Claire did not know which side he had chosen.
Then Mason grabbed the nearest guard and twisted the man's arm behind his back.
Ortiz and two federal agents entered from the opposite side.
Adrian backed away.
Claire walked onto the stage and plugged the memory card into the presentation laptop.
The giant screens behind her went black.
Then Evelyn's recorded voice filled the ballroom.
"Some accidents require planning."
No one moved.
The next clip played.
"I married her because you told me Thomas left access codes in her trust documents," Adrian's recorded voice said.
Adrian lunged toward the laptop.
An agent stopped him.
Evelyn remained perfectly still.
Claire turned toward her.
"Tell them it is fake."
Evelyn smiled.
"It is fake."
The ballroom doors opened again.
Federal prosecutor Elena Brooks entered.
Claire's stomach tightened.
Brooks walked directly toward Evelyn.
The two women looked at each other.
Then Brooks turned to the agents.
"Arrest Claire Vale for theft of classified financial records."
The room erupted.
Ortiz stared at Brooks in disbelief.

Claire finally understood Adrian had told the truth about one thing.
The system was bigger than the mansion.
