Chapter 13 - The Confession Room.

The bullet struck Adrian high in the shoulder and spun him against the stair rail.
Claire screamed despite herself.
Mason lunged at Evelyn.
She fired again.
The second bullet missed and shattered a glass cabinet.
Mason hit her wrist.
The pistol slid across the floor.
Claire kicked it beneath a steel shelf.
Evelyn clawed at Mason's face and tried to run.
Adrian blocked the stairs with his body.
Blood spread across his shirt.
For a moment, mother and son stared at each other.
"Move," Evelyn ordered.
Adrian laughed through the pain.
"You still think I'm twelve years old."
"Everything you have exists because of me."
"Everything I am exists because I was afraid of you."
The tactical team entered seconds later.
Brooks came down the stairs behind them.
Ortiz followed.
Evelyn was handcuffed against the same metal desk where Thomas Bennett had been injured seven years earlier.
She never stopped looking at Claire.
"You think this is victory?"
Claire picked up her father's notebook.
"No. This is evidence."
Adrian was taken upstairs on a stretcher.
Before he left, he told Brooks about a second hidden chamber behind the concrete wall.
Investigators found it two hours later.
Inside were boxes belonging to people who had challenged Evelyn over nearly three decades.
Some were alive.
Some had disappeared.
Three were dead.
One box belonged to Richard Vale.
Another belonged to Thomas Bennett.
Claire stood behind a glass partition while forensic teams opened the deepest section of the room.
Human remains were discovered beneath a false concrete floor.
She did not need DNA results to know who one set belonged to.
Mason stood beside her in silence.
"He deserved better," he said.
Claire did not look at him.
"He deserved you speaking seven years ago."
Mason nodded.
"Yes."
Brooks later questioned Adrian in the hospital under armed guard.
He agreed to cooperate.
Not because he had become brave.
Because he knew Evelyn would sacrifice him if she escaped conviction.
He confessed to forging Claire's signature.
He confessed to moving money from her trust.
He confessed to marrying her partly to gain access to Thomas's surviving records.
Then Brooks asked about the balcony.
Adrian stared at the camera for almost a minute.
"I pushed her."
Claire watched the live feed from the next room.
His voice broke.
"My mother told me Claire had already sent copies to the police."
Brooks leaned forward.
"Why would that make you push her?"
"Because she said if Claire talked, she would give prosecutors the recording of Thomas's death and make it look like I murdered him deliberately."
Claire felt no sympathy.
Only understanding.
Adrian had chosen himself every single time.
Brooks asked the final question.
"Did you intend for Claire to die?"
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Yes."
The answer should have ended something inside Claire.
Instead, it made everything clear.
Then Adrian opened his eyes again.
"But there is one thing Claire doesn't know."
Brooks waited.
"My mother knew the memory card was a decoy before I pushed Claire."
Claire stepped closer to the glass.
Adrian looked directly toward the camera.
"The balcony was never about destroying the evidence."
Brooks frowned.
May you like
"Then what was it about?"
Adrian whispered, "Making Claire look dead long enough to steal something else.
