Chapter 12 - The Mother’s Secret

Sophie sat on the basement floor, staring at the documents.
Her mother had supposedly died of cancer.
But the records suggested something else.
Her father had paid a private investigator to follow her.
Not because he suspected betrayal.
Because he believed she was being threatened.
Sophie turned another page.
There were photographs of her mother meeting Eleanor.
Another showed her mother meeting Michael.
A final photograph showed Ryan's father.
Sophie whispered.
“They all knew each other.”
Daniel nodded.
“Before you were born.”
Sophie looked at him.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I didn't know everything.”
“You knew enough.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Sophie found another recording.
She played it.
Her mother's voice filled the basement.
“If David is listening, I'm sorry.”
Sophie covered her mouth.
Her mother continued.
“I discovered what Eleanor was doing.”
A pause.
“I tried to stop her.”
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“Michael threatened Sophie before she was born.”
Sophie stared at the screen.
Her mother had known.
She had been protecting her.
But then another voice appeared.
Eleanor.
“We can solve this quietly.”
Sophie stopped the recording.
Daniel whispered.
“They were partners.”
Sophie shook her head.
“No.”
She played it again.
Her mother said something unexpected.
“Eleanor, I'm leaving.”
Eleanor answered.
“You cannot.”
Her mother replied.
“I already told David.”
A sound followed.
A crash.
Then silence.
Sophie realized her mother's death had never been investigated properly.
She looked at Daniel.
“Was my mother murdered?”
Daniel did not answer.
That was answer enough.
Sophie stood.
“We need the police.”
Marcus appeared at the basement entrance.
“The police are already here.”
Sophie frowned.
“They're upstairs.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Not all of them.”
He held up a badge.
“One of the officers who arrived with the first team is Michael's man.”
Sophie felt another wave of anger.
“How deep does this go?”
Marcus answered.
“Deeper than your father ever told us.”
A noise came from upstairs.
Ryan shouted.
“Sophie!”
She ran.
When she reached the kitchen, Ryan was gone.
The front door was open.
A note lay on the counter.
Sophie picked it up.
COME TO THE OLD CHAPEL.
COME ALONE.
OR RYAN DIES.
She closed her eyes.
Daniel reached for her.
“Don't go.”
Sophie looked at him.
“They have Ryan.”
Marcus shook his head.
“It's a trap.”
“I know.”
“Then don't walk into it.”
Sophie looked at the red emergency button.
She pressed it.
The light turned green.
“I won't.”
She smiled coldly.
“They think I'm coming alone.”
She looked at Marcus.
May you like
“But I'm not.”
Sophie could barely process the recording of her mother. She had spent years grieving a woman she believed had died after a long illness. Now grief mixed with anger. Her mother had known about the danger and had tried to protect her. But protection had created another silence that eventually became part of the trap. Sophie understood that love could be sincere and still leave terrible consequences when fear dictated every decision.
