Chapter 8 - The Bargain

Ryan sat beneath the kitchen lights, looking smaller than Sophie had ever seen him.

His secret changed nothing.

And yet it changed everything.

Sophie wanted to hate him.

She still did.

But hatred could not erase the fact that he had been terrified.

Marcus asked the obvious question.

“How much time?”

Ryan answered quietly.

“Six months.”

Sophie looked away.

“You should have told me.”

“I was ashamed.”

“You should have trusted me.”

“I didn't think you would stay.”

Sophie looked at him.

“You didn't give me the choice.”

Ryan lowered his head.

Daniel walked toward the window.

“Michael will know the recording has been accessed.”

Marcus nodded.

“He'll come.”

Sophie asked.

“When?”

Marcus looked at the security monitor.

“Already.”

The driveway camera showed headlights approaching.

One vehicle.

Then another.

Then three more.

Sophie felt her stomach tighten.

Ryan stood.

“We need to leave.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel agreed.

“If we run, he controls the story.”

Sophie looked at the red button.

“Then we make him come inside.”

Marcus stared at her.

“You have a plan.”

Sophie nodded.

“I've been preparing for two months.”

She explained.

The emergency system had been designed by her father.

Every activation triggered not only security personnel but a secure cloud upload.

The recording was already being copied.

If Michael entered the house, every word he spoke would be preserved.

Marcus smiled faintly.

“That is exactly what your father would have done.”

Sophie looked at Ryan.

“You're going to call him.”

Ryan stared.

“No.”

“You know how to make him talk.”

“He'll kill me.”

Sophie answered.

“He already believes you're disposable.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Then he picked up the phone.

Michael answered immediately.

“Where is the ledger?”

Ryan replied.

“You have five minutes to come inside.”

Michael laughed.

“You don't give me orders.”

Ryan looked at Sophie.

Then he spoke.

“I found the recording.”

Silence.

Michael's voice changed.

“Where?”

Ryan smiled for the first time that night.

“Come find out.”

The call ended.

Sophie exhaled.

Daniel moved Lily toward a concealed safe room.

Marcus positioned his team.

Eleanor stood alone.

Sophie approached her.

“You can still tell the truth.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“You don't understand what Michael is capable of.”

“I understand now.”

“He killed people.”

“So did your silence.”

Eleanor began to cry.

“I was afraid.”

Sophie looked at her.

“So was I.”

Outside, the vehicles stopped.

Doors opened.

Footsteps approached.

Michael had arrived.

And this time, Sophie was ready.

Ryan finally admitted that his illness had changed the way he thought. When the diagnosis came, he had convinced himself that protecting Lily mattered more than honesty. Michael offered access to treatment, then slowly turned that promise into a chain. Sophie did not excuse him. But for the first time, she understood the shape of his fear. Understanding did not mean forgiveness. It meant she could finally separate the man he had become from the choices he had made.
