Chapter 14 - The Inheritance

The truth changed the entire case.
Lily was not simply an innocent child caught between adults.
She was the legal beneficiary of the Mercer family trust.
Her grandfather had transferred control to her before his death.
Michael had spent years trying to gain access.
Eleanor had helped him.
Ryan had been used.
Sophie had been manipulated.
But Lily had always been the key.
Marcus explained that the trust contained ownership stakes in dozens of companies.
The financial value was enormous.
But the real power was information.
The trust controlled evidence that could expose the entire network.
Sophie understood why Michael had been desperate.
She also understood why her father had built the emergency button.
It was not merely a panic device.
It was an authentication system.
Only Sophie and Lily could activate the final archive.
Sophie looked at her daughter.
“You saved me.”
Lily shook her head.
“Grandpa saved us.”
Sophie hugged her.
Ryan watched from across the room.
He looked exhausted.
Sophie walked toward him.
“You gave Michael the password.”
Ryan nodded.
“I did.”
“I can't forgive you yet.”
“I know.”
“But you saved Lily.”
Ryan looked at her.
“I would do anything for her.”
Sophie paused.
“Then live.”
Ryan looked confused.
“What?”
“You need treatment.”
He smiled sadly.
“You still care.”
Sophie answered.
“I care about the father Lily deserves.”
Ryan lowered his eyes.
Marcus entered with news.
“Michael has been transferred.”
Sophie asked.
“Where is Eleanor?”
Marcus shook his head.
“She disappeared from the chapel.”
Daniel entered.
“She won't get far.”
Sophie looked at him.
“You knew she was involved.”
Daniel nodded.
“I suspected.”
“You let me walk into danger.”
“I knew Marcus was following.”
Sophie shook her head.
“I am tired of men deciding what risks I can handle.”
Daniel smiled.
“Then decide.”
Sophie looked at the trust documents.
She had spent two months reacting.
Now she would act.
She called the authorities.
She released the recordings.
She sent the financial records to investigators.
Within hours, arrests began.
Michael's accounts were frozen.
Eleanor's properties were searched.
The network started collapsing.
But one final message arrived.
It came from an unknown number.
Sophie opened it.
You found the money.
You found Michael.
You found Eleanor.
But you still haven't found the person who ordered everything.
Sophie stared.
A second message appeared.
Look at the first page of your father's medical file.
She opened the file.
The cause of death was listed as natural.
But beneath it was a handwritten correction.
POISONING SUSPECTED.
Sophie felt her blood run cold.
The person who ordered her father's death had never been arrested.
May you like
And someone was still watching the house.
The documents were finally transferred to investigators, but Sophie knew justice would not erase the past. There would be trials, headlines, questions, and people who would claim they had never known anything. She was prepared for that. The most important thing was that Lily would grow up without being taught to mistake fear for love. Ryan's recovery would take time, and Sophie knew their relationship might never return to what it had been. But honesty could finally begin where secrecy had ended.
