Chapter 6 - The Night They Came for Lily

Glass shattered across the entryway.

Marcus pulled Lily behind the kitchen island.

Sophie crouched beside her daughter.

Ryan stood frozen.

Eleanor screamed.

Daniel disappeared into the darkness.

Then the emergency lights returned.

Three masked figures stood outside.

Marcus shouted for everyone to stay down.

The security team moved into position.

A struggle erupted in the hallway.

Sophie held Lily tightly.

Her daughter was shaking.

“Mommy, are they going to hurt us?”

Sophie kissed her forehead.

“Not tonight.”

Ryan looked at them.

Something in his expression changed.

He stepped forward.

One of the intruders pointed toward him.

“Where is the ledger?”

Ryan said nothing.

The man raised his weapon.

Sophie shouted.

“Ryan!”

Ryan moved.

The shot struck the wall.

Marcus tackled the attacker.

The second intruder ran toward the staircase.

Daniel appeared behind him.

The attacker stopped.

Daniel whispered something.

The man dropped his weapon and fled.

The third man disappeared through the rear door.

Silence returned.

Sophie looked at Ryan.

He was bleeding from his shoulder.

She moved toward him.

Ryan raised a hand.

“Don't.”

“You're hurt.”

“I deserve it.”

“That doesn't mean you should bleed.”

She helped him sit.

Marcus returned.

“Two escaped.”

Daniel emerged from the hallway.

“One.”

Marcus looked at him.

“What happened to the other?”

Daniel answered.

“He won't be coming back.”

Sophie looked between them.

“Who are these people?”

Marcus opened the blue ledger.

“They work for a private financial syndicate.”

Daniel corrected him.

“They work for the person who owns it.”

Sophie stared.

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then he looked at Ryan.

Ryan closed his eyes.

“Say it.”

Daniel spoke.

“Your husband's business partner.”

Sophie frowned.

“Michael?”

Ryan nodded.

Sophie remembered him.

Michael had been at their wedding.

He had held Lily when she was a baby.

He had called Sophie family.

She felt sick.

“He has been doing this all along?”

Daniel answered.

“He created the companies Eleanor used.”

Marcus added.

“He also controlled the accounts.”

Sophie looked at Ryan.

“Why did you stay with him?”

Ryan's voice was barely audible.

“Because he threatened Lily.”

Sophie stared at him.

“You could have told me.”

“I thought I could fix it.”

“You almost destroyed us.”

“I know.”

For the first time, Ryan did not defend himself.

He simply looked broken.

Then Marcus opened another file.

“There is one problem.”

Sophie asked.

“What?”

“The ledger isn't the evidence your father was talking about.”

Daniel nodded.

“The ledger only proves the money.”

Marcus turned the page.

“We still need the original recording.”

Sophie frowned.

“What recording?”

Daniel looked at her.

“The recording that proves who ordered your father's death.”

Eleanor whispered.

“It doesn't exist.”

Daniel smiled.

“It does.”

He pointed toward the kitchen.

“It was hidden here.”

Sophie looked around.

“Where?”

Daniel answered.

May you like

“Inside the emergency button.”

When the attackers retreated, the kitchen looked strangely ordinary again. The oranges still lay scattered across the floor, bright against the dark wood. Lily's abandoned cup remained beside her plate. Sophie realized that ordinary objects could become permanent memories after a night like this. She would never see an orange roll across a kitchen floor without remembering the moment she understood that her family had been living inside a carefully constructed lie.
