Chapter 5 - The Man at the Staircase

The man stepped into the light.
Sophie stared.
Daniel Mercer.
Her father's younger brother.
Her uncle.
She had not seen him in twelve years.
Ryan's knees nearly buckled.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Daniel descended slowly.
He wore a black coat and carried no weapon.
That somehow made him more frightening.
Sophie whispered his name.
“Daniel?”
He smiled sadly.
“You grew up.”
Sophie could barely breathe.
“You were supposed to be dead.”
Daniel stopped.
“That was the point.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“You have exactly five seconds to explain why you're inside this house.”
Daniel looked at him.
“David trusted you.”
“Yes.”
“Then you know why I'm here.”
Marcus did not lower his guard.
“Not yet.”
Daniel looked at Sophie.
“Your father discovered the truth too late.”
Sophie asked.
“What truth?”
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“She knows.”
Eleanor suddenly shouted.
“Don't.”
Daniel smiled.
“You've spent twelve years pretending I didn't exist.”
Sophie turned toward Eleanor.
“What happened twelve years ago?”
Eleanor's face was pale.
Ryan stepped between them.
“Mom.”
Daniel laughed.
“Still protecting her.”
Sophie looked at Ryan.
“Move.”
Ryan did not.
Sophie repeated herself.
“Move.”
He finally stepped aside.
Daniel spoke.
“Your father discovered that Eleanor had been using his charity foundation to launder money.”
Sophie shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“She had help.”
Sophie looked at Ryan.
Daniel said quietly.
“Not Ryan.”
Then he pointed toward the hallway.
“Your father hired an investigator.”
Marcus stiffened.
“Who?”
Daniel answered.
“Me.”
Sophie stared.
Daniel explained that David had staged Daniel's death after discovering that someone inside the company was hunting him.
The plan was supposed to expose the network.
Instead, the investigator disappeared.
Daniel had gone underground.
David kept investigating alone.
Then he died.
Sophie felt tears burning her eyes.
“Why didn't you come back?”
Daniel's voice broke.
“Because the person controlling the network threatened Lily before she was even born.”
Ryan looked away.
Sophie noticed.
“You knew.”
Ryan nodded.
“I knew there was a threat.”
“You never told me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
Sophie shook her head.
“You were controlling me.”
Ryan's eyes filled with shame.
“I didn't know how to stop it.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You should have told her.”
Ryan whispered.
“I was afraid.”
Daniel answered.
“So was everyone.”
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
The sound came from Eleanor's handbag.
She slowly reached inside.
Marcus shouted.
“Don't.”
But Eleanor pulled out the phone.
The screen displayed one message.
LEAVE THE HOUSE NOW OR LILY DIES.
Sophie felt the world tilt.
Ryan saw the message.
His face changed completely.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“The network knows we're here.”
Marcus immediately moved toward Lily.
Sophie grabbed her daughter.
Then the lights went out again.
This time, someone screamed from outside.
May you like
And the front door exploded inward.
Daniel's presence forced Sophie to reconsider every story she had heard about her family. She remembered being told that some relatives simply disappeared because of disagreements. She remembered adults lowering their voices whenever she entered a room. As a child, she had assumed those silences meant she was being protected. Now she understood that silence could also be a prison. The realization hurt more than the injury in her leg.
