Chapter 12 - The Hearing of Lies.

The emergency hearing took place by video from a private conference room inside the hotel.
Judge Elaine Porter appeared on a screen above a mahogany table.
Jennifer wore the same red dress, now torn at one shoulder and stained with construction dust.
Daniel had changed into a fresh navy suit.
The contrast was deliberate.
He wanted the judge to see chaos when she looked at Jennifer and control when she looked at him.
Dr. Samuel Pierce testified first.
"Mrs. Mercer showed signs of persecutory delusion, impulsive aggression, and severe memory disruption."
Jennifer's attorney, Maya Chen, leaned toward the camera.
"Where did you examine her?"
"At my clinic."
"On what date?"
The doctor named a Monday in May.
Maya displayed hotel security footage showing Jennifer addressing an investment conference in Singapore that entire day.
Pierce changed his answer.
"My assistant may have entered the wrong date."
"Did your assistant also fabricate Mrs. Mercer's signature?"
Maya held up the tan folder and removed the forged assessment.
The signature read Jennifer M. Hale.
Jennifer's legal name had been Jennifer Anne Hale Mercer for seven years.
Daniel interrupted.
"She often used her maiden name during episodes."
Judge Porter stared at him.
"You are not the witness, Mr. Mercer."
For the first time, his confidence slipped.
Maya introduced the pharmacy records, Ellen's audio, and Olivia's microphone file.
Daniel's attorney argued that the recordings were incomplete, stolen, and possibly edited.
He displayed photographs from the banquet showing Jennifer holding the cake knife after police recovered it.
The angle hid Vanessa and made Jennifer appear to be threatening Daniel.
Several guests had already posted the image online under headlines calling her the Red-Dress Heiress.
Maya showed the judge the full security sequence, but the damage to public opinion had already begun.
Daniel had prepared not only a court case, but a spectacle.
The judge agreed they required forensic authentication.
Then Vanessa took the witness seat.
Jennifer watched fear twist her face.
"Did Daniel Mercer ask you to collect medication in your name?" Maya asked.
Vanessa looked toward Olivia, who sat outside with Ellen.
Daniel's attorney slid a document across the table.
It was a petition seeking emergency custody of Olivia on the grounds of Vanessa's drug abuse.
Daniel had signed it minutes earlier.
Vanessa's courage collapsed.
"No," she whispered.
Jennifer closed her eyes.
"Did Daniel promise you ownership in Blue Finch?"
"No."
Daniel smiled at Jennifer.
Vanessa had chosen fear again.
Judge Porter announced that the temporary order would remain in effect until the evidence could be authenticated.
Daniel retained control of Hale Holdings.
He stood before the screen went dark.
"I have a creditor meeting to attend."
Jennifer watched him leave with the final minutes of her company.
Her phone filled with messages from directors demanding that she resign permanently.
One news alert reported that Hale Holdings shares had fallen eighteen percent before trading was halted.
Daniel had converted private cruelty into a public panic worth hundreds of millions.
Vanessa remained at the table, shaking.
"He will take her from me."
"He will take everything from everyone until someone stops bargaining with him."
The conference room door opened.
An injured Martin Kessler entered with dried blood along his collar.
He held one torn corner of the missing Blue Finch contract.
"Daniel has the master laptop in the ballroom control room."
"At noon, it will execute the transfer automatically."
May you like
Maya checked the clock.
Eleven minutes remained.
