Chapter 5 - The Woman With the Knife.

Vanessa moved behind Daniel without making a sound.

The silver cake knife shook in her hand.

Jennifer kept her gaze on her husband so he would not turn.

"You planned this during your daughter's birthday party."

"My daughter's future depends on what you sign."

"You could have protected her by telling the truth."

"Truth is a luxury for people born with your last name."

Daniel pushed the authorization closer.

"Sign it."

The page carried a notary seal dated two days in the future.

Daniel had prepared the lie so completely that he had even scheduled the moment Jennifer was supposed to surrender.

"You could own every hotel and still be the man who kidnapped his daughter," Jennifer said.

"Children forgive whatever they are taught to forget."

Olivia flinched, and the cruelty of his answer settled any remaining doubt in Jennifer's heart.

She would not merely escape him.

She would make certain he never controlled the child's memory of this night.

Olivia saw her mother and opened her mouth.

Vanessa pressed one finger to her lips.

Carl noticed the movement first.

He spun and grabbed Vanessa's wrist.

The knife struck the floor and skidded beneath the counter.

Olivia screamed.

Jennifer drove the metal pen into Daniel's hand and pulled the folder away.

Daniel cursed and struck her shoulder hard enough to send her against the unfinished wall.

Vanessa bit Carl's hand, tore free, and rushed to her daughter.

The elevator opened behind them.

Detective Sloan and two officers surged into the east wing.

Carl raised both hands.

Daniel pointed at Jennifer.

"She attacked me."

Sloan looked at Olivia, the tied nanny, and the unsigned transfer page.

"That explanation may need work."

Daniel's expression remained oddly calm as the officers cuffed Carl.

Carl glanced at Daniel twice, silently begging for help.

Daniel never acknowledged the man who had risked his freedom for him.

That abandonment frightened Carl more than the handcuffs.

"He promised my family a house," Carl blurted.

Daniel's attorney immediately ordered him to stop talking.

Sloan separated Carl from the others before panic could become a confession.

Jennifer understood why when she checked the folder.

The microtransmitter pen was there.

The original paternity report was there.

The corporate contract was not.

During the struggle, someone had taken the final document connecting Daniel to Blue Finch.

Vanessa clutched Olivia and refused to meet Jennifer's eyes.

"Search her," Jennifer said.

Vanessa recoiled.

"I just helped save you."

"And Daniel promised you twenty percent of my company."

Sloan found a folded page inside the sleeve of Vanessa's silver gown.

The document bore Daniel's signature, but the space naming the buyer had been cut away.

Without that section, it proved fraud but not who controlled the fund.

Daniel smiled through the pain in his hand.

"A desperate mistress stealing papers is not evidence against me."

Olivia buried her face against Vanessa.

Jennifer wanted to shield the child from every word, but Daniel seemed determined to make innocence pay for his crimes.

"Tell them why you took it," Jennifer said.

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"He said he would take Olivia away if I didn't."

"You don't have a legal custody agreement with him."

"He has photographs of me buying pills."

Daniel laughed.

"She is an addict, Jennifer."

Vanessa shook her head violently.

"They were your pills."

Sloan glanced at the pharmacy report from the folder.

The prescriptions used to drug Jennifer had been collected under Vanessa's identification.

Daniel had built two criminals out of the women around him, planning to sacrifice whichever one stopped obeying first.

The elevator doors opened again.

Robert stood there, pale and breathing hard.

"Jennifer, we have to leave now."

"The board moved its emergency meeting to midnight."

"Daniel has already submitted your competency order."

May you like

Jennifer looked at the clock on the dusty wall.

She had forty-three minutes to prove she was sane, stop the transfer, and save the company her father had just admitted helping Daniel endanger.
