Chapter 7 - Her Mother's Pearls.

Robert stared at the evidence reader as his own voice echoed beneath the chandelier.

"No one touches my daughter."

The recording continued.

Daniel laughed softly.

"Then persuade her, Robert."

"The bank takes everything tomorrow unless she signs, and your wife learns why the company is bankrupt."

Robert's next words were barely audible.

"She can never know what I did."

Ellen pulled away from him.

"What did you do?"

Robert looked twenty years older in the warm light.

"I pledged Jennifer's inheritance as security for a hotel expansion."

"You had no legal right."

"I thought the project would save us."

Jennifer felt anger rise slowly because shock had nowhere left to live.

Her father had spent her life teaching her that the Hale name meant responsibility.

Now she learned he had gambled her future and handed the loss to her husband.

Ellen removed her wedding ring and placed it beside the ruined evidence reader.

"I asked you every month whether the company was safe," she told Robert.

"You lied while Daniel learned exactly which fear would control you."

Robert did not reach for the ring.

"You helped Daniel make me look incompetent."

"Never."

"You stayed silent while he drugged me."

"I did not know about the pills until tonight."

Sloan paused the recording.

"The audio implicates Daniel in a conspiracy, but we need the original device and an authenticated timeline."

Ellen touched the gap in her necklace.

"The recorder was inside the pearl all evening."

A sharp crack came from above.

The chandelier went dark.

So did every screen in the ballroom.

Someone collided with Jennifer in the blackness.

The evidence reader vanished from her hand.

Guests shouted as chairs scraped across the marble.

Jennifer grabbed the tan folder and held it against her chest.

Emergency lights glowed red along the walls.

She saw a figure in a navy suit moving toward the kitchen.

"Daniel!"

She ran after him.

He crashed through the service doors and knocked a tray into her path.

Jennifer stepped over shattered plates and followed him into the catering corridor.

The red emergency light transformed his face into something stripped of charm.

He held the evidence reader in his bandaged hand.

"You should have signed at the table."

"You should have learned that fear is not loyalty."

Daniel hurled the device into an industrial sink filled with soapy water.

Jennifer lunged, but he seized her by the back of her red dress.

The fabric tore at the shoulder.

He shoved her against a steel counter.

"Your father destroyed the company before I ever touched it."

"I simply made sure I would survive."

Jennifer drove her heel onto his foot and broke free.

Sloan entered with her weapon drawn.

Daniel raised his hands and smiled.

"I found Mrs. Mercer destroying evidence."

The detective looked from him to Jennifer.

Then she reached into the sink and lifted the ruined reader.

The memory card slot was empty.

Jennifer checked the tan folder.

The sealed evidence envelope was gone as well.

Daniel had taken the card and the original paternity report during the blackout.

Sloan searched him and found nothing.

From the ballroom, Olivia began to cry.

She stood beside the glass table holding the missing memory card between two fingers.

"Mr. Daniel told me to hide this in Aunt Jennifer's purse."
