Chapter 9 - The Name Behind the Company.

No one spoke until the ambulance doors closed around Lucas.
Jennifer stared at the Blue Finch flash drive in Sloan's gloved hand.
Her mother's name felt more impossible than Daniel's betrayal.
Robert leaned against a concrete pillar.
"Ellen knew the company existed, but she never controlled it."
"The registry says otherwise," Sloan replied.
"The most recent filing names her as sole beneficiary."
The signature page included a photograph of Ellen taken during a passport appointment.
Someone had built a full biometric identity around her without her knowledge.
Sloan warned that the filing could still be genuine if Ellen had signed while under pressure.
Jennifer hated the suspicion that rose inside her.
Daniel had poisoned more than her tea.
He had poisoned the instinct to believe her own mother.
Vanessa tried to slip toward the stairwell.
Jennifer caught her arm.
"Why did you run when you heard my mother's name?"
"Because Daniel said Ellen was his protection."
Robert swore under his breath.
Vanessa's eyes filled with bitter tears.
"He told me your mother hated you for taking the company from her."
"He said she would testify that you had been unstable since college."
Jennifer released her.
Daniel had not merely forged documents.
He had designed a version of the Hale family in which every private wound became a weapon.
They returned to the ballroom and found Ellen sitting beneath the chandelier with Olivia asleep against her shoulder.
The older woman's light blue dress was wrinkled, and her pearl necklace hung open at the clasp.
Jennifer placed the registry record before her.
"Why is Blue Finch in your name?"
Ellen read it twice.
"It isn't."
"The filing uses your passport number and your signature."
"My passport disappeared last winter."
Robert looked at Daniel.
"You told us the hotel safe lost it."
Daniel sat calmly between two officers, still protected by the absence of a formal arrest.
"I helped Ellen replace a missing passport."
"That is what husbands do for family."
Jennifer moved closer.
"You copied her identity and made her the beneficiary."
"Why?"
Daniel's gaze moved to Ellen.
"Because she asked me to."
Ellen stood so quickly that Olivia stirred.
"You filthy liar."
Daniel's attorney entered the ballroom with a court officer.
The officer carried a sealed emergency order.
Jennifer was commanded to surrender all company devices and stay fifty feet from Hale property until the competency hearing.
Daniel had used the Blue Finch filing to argue that Jennifer's accusations against her mother proved delusional paranoia.
The irony was so vicious that even Sloan looked disgusted.
"You need to leave the hotel," the court officer told Jennifer.
Jennifer placed the tan folder on the glass table one final time.
Daniel leaned toward her.
"At noon, Blue Finch will own this building."
"Your mother will appear responsible."
"Your father will go to prison."
"And everyone will remember you as the woman who destroyed them both."
Jennifer looked at her parents.
Robert's shame and Ellen's fear told her Daniel's plan might succeed.
Then Olivia opened her eyes.
"Aunt Jennifer, I have the other recording."
She pointed toward the mountain of birthday gifts.
"It's inside my pink microphone."
The largest gift box was empty.
Olivia slid from Ellen's lap and searched beneath the table herself.
She found a strip of navy fabric caught on the box's gold ribbon.
It matched the torn lining inside Daniel's suit jacket.
Daniel claimed dozens of men wore navy suits.
May you like
Olivia answered with painful simplicity.
"But only you knew which present made recordings."
