Chapter 8 - Blue Finch.

Daniel's smile disappeared.
Olivia walked toward Jennifer while Vanessa hovered behind her.
"He said it was part of a magic trick."
Jennifer knelt and accepted the card without touching its metal contacts.
"You did the right thing by telling us."
Daniel stepped forward.
Sloan blocked him.
"Stay where you are."
"A frightened child misunderstood me."
"Then you can explain that after we recover the recording."
The card was damp but undamaged.
Sloan sealed it in an evidence bag and handed it to an officer.
Daniel watched the bag leave the ballroom with the helpless fury of a man seeing his future carried away.
Yet Jennifer knew the recording alone would not restore her company.
At midnight, Daniel had become temporary chair.
His first act was to authorize a two-hundred-million-dollar loan from Blue Finch.
The collateral was every Hale hotel in the country.
The repayment deadline was noon.
No legitimate lender wrote an eleven-hour loan.
The purpose was default.
Three Hale hotels had already received automated notices announcing a change in ownership.
Managers were being instructed to surrender employee records, bank access, and security codes at noon.
Thousands of workers had no idea their livelihoods were being traded beneath birthday balloons.
Jennifer sent one message through Maya instructing every manager to preserve records and refuse unusual transfers.
It was the last command she could issue before Daniel revoked her access.
Jennifer's investigator, Lucas Keene, was the only person who had traced Blue Finch to its controlling owner.
He had stopped answering his phone six hours earlier.
Jennifer opened the tan folder to the final page.
It contained a map of the hotel parking garage and a handwritten number.
P4-117.
Lucas had slipped it to the waiter before disappearing.
Jennifer showed the map to Sloan.
They descended in the service elevator while Robert and Ellen remained with Olivia.
Vanessa insisted on joining them.
"Daniel used me to collect Jennifer's prescriptions."
"I can identify anyone he hired."
The fourth underground level smelled of oil and wet concrete.
Space 117 held a black sedan with fogged windows.
Lucas lay unconscious across the back seat.
The doors were locked, and the engine was running.
Sloan broke the window with her baton.
Jennifer helped pull Lucas into the cold air while Vanessa called for paramedics.
His pulse was weak but steady.
When he opened his eyes, he gripped Jennifer's wrist.
"Blue Finch was not Daniel's company at first."
"Whose was it?"
Lucas looked toward the elevator.
Robert stood there despite Jennifer's order to remain upstairs.
"Ask your father."
Robert closed his eyes.
"I created Blue Finch twelve years ago."
"It was meant to hold emergency assets if Hale Holdings failed."
Jennifer felt the floor tilt beneath her.
"You hid company property in a shell corporation."
"I hid it from your uncle, who was trying to force a sale."
Robert explained that Blue Finch had once been an emergency vault rather than a lender.
It held trademarks, land options, and insurance proceeds that could rebuild Hale Holdings after a hostile takeover.
When the threat passed, he should have dissolved it.
Instead, shame made him conceal its existence even from Jennifer.
That forgotten structure became the empty house Daniel quietly occupied.
Lucas coughed and pointed toward his jacket.
Inside was a flash drive bearing the Blue Finch logo.
"Daniel changed the ownership using Robert's old credentials."
"But he didn't make himself the final beneficiary."
Jennifer looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa slowly backed away.
"Who is it?" Jennifer demanded.
May you like
Lucas answered before she could run.
"Ellen Hale."
