Chapter 11 - The Shot in the Dark.

Grant hit the floor on one knee.

For half a second, Willa thought he had been shot.

Then she saw the bullet hole in the wall behind him.

The shot had missed.

Everyone looked up.

Marissa stood on the balcony holding the pistol Eleanor had surrendered earlier.

Her hands were shaking violently.

“I said nobody moves.”

Owen stared at her.

“How did you get that?”

“I took it from the penthouse before the power went out.”

Daniel’s expression darkened.

Marissa pointed the weapon at Cross.

“You promised me my brother would be safe.”

Cross looked genuinely surprised.

Willa turned toward Marissa.

“Your brother?”

Marissa’s eyes filled with tears.

She confessed that Cross had recruited her two years earlier.

Her younger brother had lost millions in a fraudulent investment tied to one of Cross’s shell companies.

Cross offered to erase the debt if Marissa gave him information about Daniel’s private archive.

At first, she provided schedules and harmless documents.

Then he demanded the trust amendment.

Marissa stole it that morning.

Daniel’s face went rigid.

“Where is it?”

Marissa swallowed.

“I did not give it to him.”

Cross’s calm disappeared.

“Marissa.”

“I finally understood why you wanted it.”

She looked at Willa.

“If Cross destroys the amendment, Grant remains the uncontested Sterling heir unless someone proves the paternity case in court.”

Eleanor nodded.

“And Cross can keep using Grant to control the company.”

Marissa reached inside her coat with one hand.

Cross’s bodyguard moved.

She raised the gun again.

“Don’t.”

From her pocket, she removed a folded legal document sealed inside plastic.

Daniel inhaled sharply.

“The amendment.”

Grant stared at it.

His entire future seemed to shrink into the object in her hand.

Willa watched him change.

Fear became rage.

He rushed the stairs.

Marissa pointed the gun downward.

Willa screamed his name.

Grant did not stop.

Owen tackled him before he reached the first step.

The gun fired again.

This bullet struck the ceiling.

Dust fell across the lobby.

Cross’s bodyguard reached for his own weapon.

Daniel shouted that police were already on the way.

That stopped everyone except Cross.

He looked at Marissa.

“Your brother is not safe.”

Marissa’s face collapsed.

Cross smiled.

“He is sitting in a car outside your mother’s house.”

Willa’s heart stopped.

Marissa lowered the gun without realizing it.

Cross’s bodyguard moved toward her.

Grant broke free from Owen.

But instead of running for the amendment, he ran toward Cross.

“You used me.”

Cross barely had time to turn.

Grant hit him with both hands, sending him backward into a row of seats.

The bodyguard drew his weapon.

Willa grabbed Marissa and pulled her down.

Daniel shouted.

Eleanor screamed.

Then sirens flooded the street outside.

The bodyguard hesitated.

Cross looked toward the doors.

His face changed for the first time that night.

He was afraid.

But Grant was smiling.

Willa looked at him in horror.

“Why are you smiling?”

Marissa's confession landed harder on Daniel than Willa expected.

He had trusted her with medical records, family correspondence, and access codes no one else possessed.

Marissa looked at him through tears.

“I kept telling myself I was borrowing information, not betraying people.”

Daniel replied quietly.

“That is how betrayal usually introduces itself.”

Willa looked at both of them.

There were no clean people left in the room.

Only people deciding whether the next thing they did would be better or worse than the last.

Grant turned toward her.

May you like

“Because those are not police sirens.”
