Chapter 6 - The Man Behind the Trust.

Daniel pulled Willa away from the door as Owen moved toward a locked cabinet beneath the kitchen counter.
Eleanor grabbed his arm.
“No guns.”
Owen looked at her as if she had lost her mind.
“If Grant came alone, a gun makes him desperate.”
The voice outside remained calm.
“I only want to talk.”
Willa almost laughed.
She remembered Grant saying the same thing on the balcony.
Daniel pointed toward a second exit hidden behind a sliding wall.
Willa shook her head.
“I am done running without answers.”
Eleanor held the flash drive against her chest.
“There is a recording on this.”
“Of what?”
“Victor’s last private conversation with me.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You told me Victor never knew.”
“I lied.”
The pounding on the door stopped.
That was worse.
Eleanor explained quickly.
Victor discovered the paternity fraud six months before his death.
He did not expose it because the Sterling company was already close to collapse after an illegal lending scheme.
If the scandal had become public, banks would have frozen everything.
Instead, Victor rewrote part of the family trust in secret.
He created a contingency clause transferring control to the closest verified Sterling blood relative if Grant’s paternity was ever challenged.
Willa frowned.
“Then who is the relative?”
Eleanor looked at Daniel.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“No.”
Willa turned to him.
“What?”
Eleanor’s voice dropped.
“Victor had a younger half-brother.”
Daniel stood completely still.
Willa felt the room tilt.
“No.”
Her father closed his eyes.
Eleanor continued anyway.
“Daniel Harrow’s mother had been married before she met his father.”
Willa stared at Daniel.
“You’re Victor Sterling’s brother?”
“Half-brother.”
The words barely left his mouth.
Willa stepped backward.
Every secret seemed to lead to another secret her father had decided she could not handle.
“So if Grant loses the trust…”
Eleanor nodded.
“Daniel becomes the senior living Sterling blood relative.”
Willa’s voice hardened.
“And after him?”
No one answered.
She understood anyway.
“Me.”
The door handle began to turn.
Owen looked at Daniel.
“The override code is being used.”
Eleanor whispered, “Grant has Victor’s old master key.”
Daniel moved Willa toward the hidden exit.
This time she went.
They entered a narrow maintenance stairwell just as the penthouse door opened behind them.
Grant called into the darkness.
“Willa, you should ask your father why he really hates me.”
Daniel kept moving.
Grant laughed softly.
“He didn’t warn you because I’m dangerous.”
Willa stopped on the stairs.
Daniel grabbed her wrist.
“Keep going.”
Grant’s voice followed them.
“He warned you because if you marry me, you can never inherit the Sterling trust.”
Willa looked at her father.
Daniel did not deny it.
Willa leaned against the concrete wall and tried to understand how many adults had shaped her life with secrets.
Daniel had hidden bloodlines.
Eleanor had hidden paternity.
Victor had hidden an heir.
Grant had hidden violence behind charm.
Every one of them had called secrecy protection.
Willa began to suspect that protection was simply the word powerful people used when they wanted someone else to live without choices.
She looked at Daniel.
“If we get out of this, I decide what happens next.”
Daniel nodded.
This time, he did not add a condition.
Then Grant added one final sentence.
May you like
“And ask him who signed Victor’s death certificate.”
