Chapter 5 - Eleanor at the Door.

Daniel ordered Owen to keep the garage sealed.

Eleanor stared into the security camera without moving.

Willa could not reconcile the trembling woman on the screen with the elegant figure who had watched Grant humiliate her an hour earlier.

“Why is she here?”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Because something has changed.”

Eleanor pressed the intercom.

“Daniel, if you leave me down here, Grant will find me.”

Willa leaned toward the speaker.

“You watched him hit me.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“You smiled.”

“I was trying to keep him looking at you instead of me.”

Willa recoiled.

Daniel pressed the intercom button.

“Put the gun on the ground.”

Eleanor obeyed.

“Now the flash drive.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at Willa.

Eleanor’s voice came through again.

“This is the only reason Grant has not killed me.”

The garage door behind her rattled.

Someone was testing the lock from outside.

Owen swore under his breath.

Daniel opened the inner access door.

Eleanor ran inside carrying the drive.

The moment she reached the penthouse, Willa slapped her.

The sound cracked through the bare room.

Eleanor did not raise a hand.

“That was for standing there.”

“I deserved worse.”

Willa’s eyes burned.

“Why did they laugh?”

Eleanor sat heavily in a chair.

“Because Grant told them you were unstable.”

Willa stared.

“He spent months telling people you were jealous, impulsive, and obsessed with controlling him.”

Daniel’s face darkened.

Eleanor continued.

“He arranged for three guests to laugh first.”

Willa felt physically sick.

“The others followed because they thought it was part of some ugly private joke.”

“That does not excuse them.”

“No.”

Eleanor looked at the bruise forming across Willa’s cheek.

“Nothing excuses any of us.”

She placed the flash drive on the table.

Grant had stolen Daniel’s archive file two nights earlier.

But the file contained only the old photograph and copies of altered trust papers.

It did not identify Grant’s biological father.

Grant had demanded that Eleanor tell him the name.

She refused.

He had struck her after Willa escaped the ballroom.

Willa’s voice turned cold.

“So now you care because he hit you too?”

Eleanor flinched.

“I care because he knows the truth is bigger than paternity.”

Daniel went still.

“What did you do?”

Eleanor looked at him for a long moment.

Then she said the words that changed the room.

“Victor Sterling was not Grant’s father.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“We know that.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“You do not know the rest.”

She pushed the flash drive toward Willa.

“Grant’s father is alive.”

Willa folded her arms.

“Who?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with fear.

Before she could answer, every light in the penthouse went out.

The security monitor died.

The elevator bell sounded in the dark hallway.

Daniel whispered, “No one has the elevator code.”

A familiar male voice came from the other side of the door.

Willa watched Eleanor press a hand against the cut on her face.

Part of her wanted to feel sympathy.

Another part remembered the silver gown standing motionless while Grant's hand struck her.

That memory was stronger.

Daniel asked Eleanor why she had not warned Willa before the party.

Eleanor admitted Grant had taken her phone that afternoon and threatened to expose old financial crimes if she interfered.

Willa stared at her.

“So you protected yourself.”

Eleanor's answer was barely audible.

“Yes.”

Willa nodded once.

At least the cowardice finally had an honest name.

“Mom.”

May you like

Grant had found them.
