Chapter 4 - The House With No Curtains.

Owen accelerated before the light turned green.

Grant’s motorcycle followed.

Willa watched him in the side mirror, a dark figure slipping between cars with frightening ease.

“He is behind us.”

Daniel did not hesitate.

“Do not go to the townhouse.”

Owen was already changing direction.

They cut east through three narrow streets and entered an underground garage beneath an old office building Daniel had owned for years.

The security gate closed seconds before Grant reached the entrance.

He stopped outside and stared through the steel bars.

Willa had never seen hatred look so patient.

Upstairs, Daniel was waiting in a bare penthouse that Willa had not known existed.

The rooms had white walls, no curtains, and almost no furniture.

Her father crossed the room as soon as she entered.

He saw her cheek.

His face changed.

Willa stepped back before he could touch her.

“You do not get to be furious until you explain why you let me walk into that family blind.”

Daniel stopped.

The anger in him did not disappear.

It folded inward.

“You’re right.”

Willa placed the blue envelope on the table.

“Start with this.”

Daniel sat across from her.

Twenty-two years earlier, he said, he had been a young attorney handling a confidential trust for Victor Sterling.

Eleanor had come to him late one night carrying an infant and begging for help.

Victor had ordered a private paternity test after hearing rumors about her affair.

Eleanor had intercepted the first sample but knew she could not stop a second.

Daniel had helped her replace the test paperwork with a sealed legal acknowledgment naming Victor as Grant’s father.

Willa stared at him.

“You committed fraud.”

“Yes.”

“For Eleanor.”

“For a baby.”

“That is what you tell yourself?”

Daniel absorbed the question without defending himself.

He said Victor had been violent when humiliated.

Eleanor believed that if he discovered Grant was not his biological son, he would hurt them both.

Daniel chose the lie.

Years later, Victor died believing Grant was his heir.

The Sterling fortune passed according to a family trust with a bloodline clause no one had expected to matter.

Willa’s skin went cold.

“If Grant is not Victor’s son…”

“He may not legally control the trust.”

“And if the truth comes out?”

“Billions change hands.”

Willa looked toward the dark windows.

Suddenly the laughter at the party felt different.

Grant had not slapped her simply because she contradicted him.

He had struck her after she questioned an announcement about merging the Sterling Foundation with Harrow Medical.

The merger required Willa’s proxy vote.

She had refused in front of everyone.

“Grant needs my vote.”

Daniel nodded.

“By tomorrow morning.”

“Why?”

“Because the trustees meet at noon.”

Willa felt something click into place.

“If the archive file is missing, Grant already knows.”

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“He knows enough to be terrified.”

A buzzer sounded from the wall.

Owen checked the security monitor.

His face drained of color.

A woman stood alone in the garage beneath them.

She wore Eleanor Sterling’s silver ballroom gown.

But her hair was loose, and blood marked one side of her face.

She looked directly into the camera.

Then she raised both hands.

In one hand was a flash drive.

May you like

In the other was a pistol.
