Chapter 2 - The Voice on the Line.

Willa stumbled backward as the balcony door moved beneath Grant’s hand.

Her father’s voice sharpened through the phone.

“Do not hang up.”

Grant stepped outside wearing the same calm expression he used in photographs, board meetings, and charity interviews.

Eleanor remained just inside the doorway.

That frightened Willa more than if she had followed him.

Grant lifted both hands as though approaching a frightened animal.

“You are making this much bigger than it was.”

Willa could still feel the outline of his fingers burning across her cheek.

“I called my father.”

For the first time that night, Grant’s confidence cracked.

Only for a second.

Then he smiled.

“Good.”

The answer was so unexpected that Willa stopped retreating.

Grant glanced at the phone.

“Put him on speaker.”

Daniel heard him.

“No.”

Grant’s smile vanished.

He stepped closer.

“Mr. Harrow, this is a private misunderstanding between Willa and me.”

Daniel’s reply was quiet.

“You struck my daughter.”

Grant’s jaw flexed.

“She slapped a drink out of my hand first.”

Willa stared at him.

“That never happened.”

Eleanor opened the door wider.

“You were emotional, darling.”

Willa looked past Grant.

Eleanor’s face was composed, almost maternal.

“You embarrassed Grant during his announcement, and several people saw you become physical.”

The ballroom beyond her was still full of witnesses.

Willa suddenly understood what Eleanor was doing.

They were building a version of the night before she could tell her own.

Daniel understood too.

“Willa, is your clutch still with you?”

“Yes.”

“Is the blue envelope inside it?”

Her breath caught.

Three days earlier, Daniel had sent her an envelope by courier and told her not to open it unless she ever felt unsafe around the Sterlings.

Willa had nearly thrown it away.

She had slipped it into her clutch instead.

Grant’s eyes moved toward the purse.

That was when Willa knew he knew about it.

Her father spoke again.

“Take the service stairs on your left.”

Grant stepped between her and the door.

“No one is leaving until we settle this.”

Daniel’s voice turned hard.

“Grant, move.”

Something in the way he said it made Eleanor’s expression tighten.

Grant reached for Willa’s phone.

She jerked away.

His hand caught the gold chain of the clutch instead.

The purse fell open.

A lipstick, a key card, and the folded blue envelope spilled onto the stone floor.

Grant froze.

Eleanor did not.

“Pick that up,” she said.

Grant lunged.

Willa moved first.

She snatched the envelope and ran past him through the door.

Guests turned as she crossed the corridor barefoot, one heel abandoned somewhere behind her.

She reached the service stairwell and shoved the metal door open.

Daniel stayed on the phone, giving her directions as if he could see the building.

“Down two floors.”

“How do you know where I am?”

“I know the Sterling Grand better than they think I do.”

Willa descended the stairs, hearing another door slam above her.

Grant was following.

At the landing below, she tore open the blue envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Eleanor Sterling standing beside Daniel Harrow twenty-two years earlier.

Between them was a newborn baby wrapped in a pale blue blanket.

On the back, in Daniel’s handwriting, were six words.

Willa is not the secret.

May you like

Grant is.
