Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.

The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,

casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.

Only the soft clink of porcelain came from the kitchen beyond the archway.

Evan Mercer turned his head toward the sound and realized his wife had never returned to the table.

Claire had excused herself twenty minutes earlier because their six-week-old son, Noah, had started fussing.

Evan had assumed she was feeding him in the guest room.

Instead, he found her standing at the marble sink with Noah strapped against her chest.

Her black hair had come loose from its bun.

Her silver dress was damp at the waist where dishwater had splashed against it.

Tears slid silently down her face while she scrubbed a roasting pan with one hand.

Noah slept beneath her chin as if his mother's trembling body were the safest place in the world.

Evan stopped in the kitchen doorway.

"Claire?"

She startled so badly that the pan struck the sink.

"I'm fine."

Evan looked at the tower of dishes beside her.

"Why are you doing this?"

Claire lowered her eyes.

"I can't stop yet."

The words were quiet, but something about them made his stomach tighten.

"What does that mean?"

Before Claire could answer, heels clicked against the hardwood floor behind him.

Marianne Mercer appeared in the dining room doorway wearing a dark burgundy one-shoulder dress.

Evan's mother carried herself with the calm authority of someone who had spent decades being obeyed.

"It means dinner isn't over until the kitchen is clean," Marianne said.

Evan stared at her.

"Claire just had a baby."

Marianne's mouth hardened.

"Women have had babies for thousands of years."

Claire flinched without turning around.

Evan noticed it.

That small reaction hit him harder than his mother's words.

"Mom, did you tell her she couldn't stop?"

Marianne crossed her arms.

"I told her that if she wants to live in this family, she needs to learn her place."

The room went still.

Evan stepped closer to Claire.

"Take your hands out of that sink."

Claire looked at him with panic instead of relief.

"Evan, please."

"Why are you afraid to stop?"

Marianne gave a sharp laugh.

"Because she knows responsibility matters."

Evan reached past Claire and shut off the faucet.

The sudden silence made Claire's breathing sound painfully loud.

"We're leaving," he said.

Marianne's expression changed for the first time.

"Excuse me?"

Evan slid one arm around Claire without disturbing Noah.

"We're leaving now."

His mother stepped into the kitchen.

"You walk out that door over a sink full of dishes, and don't expect me to forget it."

Evan turned and looked directly at her.

"This isn't about dishes."

Claire began to cry harder.

Marianne's eyes narrowed at her.

"Don't perform for him."

Evan moved between them.

"Enough."

He led Claire toward the hallway.

Marianne followed them three steps before stopping.

"Ask your wife why she was really crying before dinner," she called.

Claire froze.

Evan felt her hand go cold inside his.

He looked at his wife.

Claire whispered one word.

"Please."

Then Marianne smiled.

"Go ahead, Claire."

"Tell my son what you found in the nursery."
