Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Cleaned Too Quietly.

Rosa filed an emergency objection to Marianne's trustee petition before noon.
She also requested preservation of every document Marianne had submitted to the court.
Evan wanted to confront his mother immediately.
Rosa refused.
"Evidence first. Anger later."
Leah volunteered to locate Denise Cole.
Claire remembered that Denise had left a handwritten receipt in a kitchen drawer.
It included an address across town.
Evan and Leah drove there while Claire stayed with Rosa and Noah.
The address led to a narrow brick duplex near a highway overpass.
A rusted sedan sat in the driveway.
Leah knocked.
No one answered.
Evan noticed movement behind a curtain.
"Denise?"
The curtain dropped.
Leah called through the door.
"We aren't here to threaten you."
Still nothing.
"We're here because Marianne Mercer used your name in court."
The lock clicked.
Denise opened the door two inches.
Her face looked exhausted.
"I can't talk to you."
Evan kept his voice calm.
"Did you write the declaration?"
Denise looked past him toward the street.
"Please leave."
Leah stepped closer.
"Did my mother pay you?"
Denise's eyes filled with tears.
"She paid my son's medical bills."
Evan's anger vanished beneath shock.
Denise opened the door wider.
"He needed surgery."
She explained that Marianne had found out through the cleaning agency.
She offered money with no conditions at first.
Two weeks later, she asked Denise to document anything concerning in Claire's home.
Then the requests became specific.
Photograph the laundry.
Photograph medication.
Record feeding times.
Note when Claire cried.
"Did you ever see Claire neglect Noah?" Evan asked.
Denise shook her head immediately.
"Never."
"Then why did you sign the statement?"
Denise looked sick.
"I didn't."
Leah went still.
"What?"
Denise disappeared inside and returned with her phone.
She showed them a text thread with Marianne.
One message contained a draft declaration.
Denise had replied, I will not sign this because it isn't true.
Marianne's response was only one sentence.
Then consider how quickly hospitals send unpaid accounts to collections.
Evan clenched his jaw.
"Can we copy these?"
Denise hesitated.
"If she finds out, she'll destroy me."
Leah said, "She already tried."
Denise looked at her for a long moment.
Then she forwarded the entire thread.
Before they left, she added one more thing.
"There was another woman."
Evan turned.
"Who?"
"She came to the house when Claire was asleep."
"When?"
"About three weeks ago."
Denise described a thin brunette in a gray suit carrying a medical bag.
Marianne introduced her as a nurse.
The woman went upstairs with Marianne and remained near the nursery for twenty minutes.
Evan felt his stomach twist.
"Was Noah there?"
"Yes."
"Was Claire awake?"
"No."
Leah swore under her breath.
Evan called Claire immediately.
"Check Noah's medical records."
Claire sounded frightened.
"Why?"
"Just check."
Rosa accessed the patient portal with Claire's permission.
Three minutes later, she found an entry neither parent recognized.
A developmental screening had been submitted eleven days earlier.
The provider listed was Dr. Vivian Shaw.
Claire whispered, "I've never met her."
Evan searched the name.
The first result identified Vivian Shaw as a pediatric behavioral consultant.
The second result made Leah grab his arm.
