Chapter 14 - Her Place.

The courtroom was smaller than Claire expected.
That made every glance feel more personal.
Marianne sat beside Harlan Pike with perfect posture.
Evan and Claire sat with Rosa.
Leah sat behind them.
Detective Briggs waited near the back wall because a separate criminal investigation was now open.
The judge reviewed the emergency filings in silence.
Harlan spoke first.
He described Marianne as a concerned grandmother responding to a chaotic household.
He described Claire as overwhelmed after childbirth.
He described Evan as an obedient son who had suddenly become irrational after his wife's accusations.
Then he used the forged affidavit.
"Mrs. Mercer herself expressed fear of her husband."
Rosa stood.
"The affidavit is fraudulent."
Harlan smiled.
"That is an allegation."
Rosa placed the signature comparison report on the evidence screen.
A forensic document examiner had concluded that Claire's signature had been simulated from a scanned source.
Harlan's smile disappeared.
Rosa then introduced the doctor's original assessment.
Vivian testified remotely.
She stated clearly that Marianne altered her findings.
Denise testified next.
She described the money, threats, and false declaration.
Marianne's face remained calm until Denise's text messages appeared on screen.
Then Rosa introduced the vehicle tracker and baby-monitor logs.
Harlan objected repeatedly.
The judge overruled him repeatedly.
Finally, Claire took the stand.
Harlan approached slowly.
"You were exhausted after childbirth, correct?"
"Yes."
"You cried frequently?"
"Sometimes."
"You once wrote that you wanted to disappear?"
"For one day of sleep."
A few people in the courtroom shifted.
Harlan continued.
"You left your mother-in-law's home abruptly with a six-week-old infant."
Claire looked at Marianne.
"My husband removed me from a house where I was being controlled and monitored."
"That is your interpretation."
"No."
Claire's voice stayed steady.
"The tracker is an object, not an interpretation."
Harlan's jaw tightened.
He asked whether Marianne ever physically harmed her.
"No."
"Did she ever physically prevent you from leaving?"
Claire paused.
"She made me believe leaving would cost us our home and possibly our child."
Harlan spread his hands.
"Belief is not force."
Claire looked directly at him.
"It is when someone spends months manufacturing the consequences."
Rosa had no further questions.
Then the judge asked one of his own.
"Mrs. Mercer, why did you continue washing dishes that night?"
Claire breathed in.
"Because she told me a good mother proves herself by serving the family."
The judge looked toward Marianne.
"And what did your husband do?"
Claire answered quietly.
"He turned off the water."
For the first time, Evan's eyes filled with tears.
The judge issued the injunction.
Marianne's proxy was suspended.
The foundation vote was frozen.
Any attempt to use Claire's affidavit was prohibited pending investigation.
Harlan began gathering his papers.
Then Detective Briggs stepped forward.
"Marianne Mercer?"
She turned.
"You're being detained in connection with suspected forgery, witness coercion, and attempted destruction of evidence."
The courtroom erupted in whispers.
Marianne looked at Evan at last.
"You're letting them do this to your mother?"
Evan stood.
His voice was calm.
"No."
He looked at Claire and Noah's empty carrier beside her chair.
"I'm finally letting you face what you did."
Marianne's composure cracked.
"Everything I did was for this family."
Claire stepped into the aisle.
Marianne's eyes burned into her.
"You destroyed him."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
"I just stopped cleaning up after you."
Briggs escorted Marianne toward the side door.
Before she disappeared, she twisted back toward Evan.
"Ask them about your father's toxicology report!"
The room went dead silent.
Evan turned toward Briggs.

The detective did not look surprised.
That was worse than surprise.
