Chapter 9 - Someone Inside.

Rosa closed the laptop.
"Nobody leaves this apartment alone."
Evan checked the hallway through the peephole.
Nothing moved.
The corporate suite occupied the sixth floor of a building owned by Rosa's firm.
Only employees and registered guests should have access.
Leah called building security.
Rosa requested access logs for the floor.
The result arrived fifteen minutes later.
One temporary badge had entered the sixth floor twice that day.
It belonged to a courier service.
Rosa had not ordered a courier.
Security reviewed camera footage.
A man wearing a baseball cap had stepped off the elevator carrying a document envelope.
He walked directly to the suite, paused outside the door for thirty seconds, then left.
He never knocked.
Evan felt the hair rise on his arms.
"What did he do?"
Security zoomed in.
The man appeared to slide something beneath the hallway console table.
Two guards went upstairs and found a small wireless relay device taped underneath.
Rosa stared at it.
"Someone is trying very hard to know where you are."
Claire hugged Noah closer.
"We should go to police."
"We are," Rosa said.
"Now we have something physical."
They met Detective Aaron Briggs at a precinct conference room that evening.
He listened without interrupting as Rosa laid out the tracker, forged signature, surveillance, cash envelope, and relay device.
Briggs did not promise an arrest.
He did promise subpoenas.
"Money trails are easier to prove than motives," he said.
Evan gave him Denise's messages.
Briggs read them twice.
"Threatening medical debt is ugly."
"Is it criminal?" Claire asked.
"Depends on what else supports it."
Rosa slid the forged medical authorization across the table.
"Start there."
Briggs nodded.
Before they left, he gave them one warning.
"Do not underestimate someone just because she's family."
Evan almost laughed at the irony.
That was exactly what he had done for years.
They relocated again, this time to Leah's friend's vacant townhouse whose address Marianne did not know.
At 10:30 p.m., Noah finally slept in a borrowed bassinet.
Claire sat beside him on the floor.
Evan lowered himself next to her.
"I believe you."
Claire looked at him.
"Now."
He accepted the word.
"Now."
"I needed you to believe me before there was a tracker."
Evan stared at his hands.
"I know."
Claire's voice remained quiet.
"Your mother didn't do this alone."
He looked up.
"What do you mean?"
"She used your trust in her."
The truth hurt more than accusation.
Evan nodded.
"Then I'll help undo it."
Claire's phone rang.
Only Rosa, Leah, and Evan had the new number.
The screen showed an unknown caller.
They let it go to voicemail.
A minute later, Claire played the message.
A woman's voice whispered urgently.
"Claire, my name is Vivian Shaw."
Everyone froze.
"I need you to know the assessment filed under my name is not the assessment I wrote."
There was a sharp breath on the recording.
"Marianne changed it after I refused to testify."
Then Vivian added something none of them expected.
May you like
"And she isn't doing this for Noah's trust."
The message ended.
