Chapter 10 - The Real Reason.

Rosa contacted Vivian through a secure line before midnight.

The doctor sounded frightened but determined.

She agreed to meet at Rosa's office with Detective Briggs present.

The meeting happened the next morning.

Vivian arrived carrying a locked briefcase.

She apologized to Claire before she sat down.

"I should have contacted you sooner."

Claire did not soften.

"You entered my child's nursery while I was asleep."

Vivian lowered her eyes.

"I was told you had consented."

"You didn't verify that."

"No."

The admission hung in the room.

Vivian opened the briefcase.

Inside were her original notes.

They said Noah appeared healthy and securely bonded.

They said Claire was physically exhausted but attentive and responsive.

They recommended sleep support and reduced household stress.

Marianne hated the conclusion.

"She told me I had missed the point," Vivian said.

Briggs asked, "What point?"

Vivian looked toward Evan.

"She said Claire needed to be removed from the family before something irreversible happened."

Evan's face hardened.

"Why?"

Vivian hesitated.

"Because of your father."

The room went silent.

Evan's father, Thomas Mercer, had died five years earlier from a sudden heart attack.

Marianne rarely discussed him except to describe herself as the woman who held the family together afterward.

"What does my father have to do with Claire?"

Vivian slid a photocopied letter across the table.

It was written by Thomas and addressed to Eleanor, Evan's grandmother.

The letter accused Marianne of manipulating family accounts and pressuring Thomas to sign financial documents he did not understand.

Evan stared at his father's handwriting.

The letter ended with a request.

If anything happens to me, do not let Marianne control the grandchildren's inheritance.

Leah covered her mouth.

Rosa looked at Vivian.

"Where did this come from?"

"Marianne showed it to me."

Vivian's voice shook.

"She was furious because Claire found the original."

Evan turned toward Claire.

Claire looked confused.

"I never found that."

Vivian frowned.

"Marianne said you did."

Rosa leaned back.

Then she smiled without humor.

"There it is."

Evan did not understand.

"What?"

"Marianne isn't reacting to something Claire found."

Rosa tapped the letter.

"She's trying to find out whether Claire found it."

Claire remembered the locked drawer beneath the changing table.

She had seen several envelopes under the custody folder but photographed only the card before footsteps approached.

"She thought I opened everything."

Leah whispered, "So she panicked."

Rosa nodded.

The custody campaign had another purpose.

If Claire were discredited and separated from Evan, Marianne could regain access to the house, nursery, documents, and family trust without Claire questioning her.

Briggs asked Vivian whether she had evidence of altered assessments.

Vivian produced emails.

One attachment showed Marianne returning a revised report with language Vivian had never written.

Her reply was clear.

I will not sign or testify to statements I did not observe.

Marianne answered two minutes later.

Then I will find someone who understands the seriousness of the situation.

Briggs photographed everything.

Evan felt something inside him finally break free from denial.

"We go back to the house."

Rosa immediately said no.

"Not alone."

"The original letter may still be there."

Briggs agreed to request a warrant if there was probable cause for document tampering.

But legal process would take time.

Then Leah's phone vibrated.

It was a neighborhood alert from the Mercer estate area.

Fire department responding to residential smoke alarm.

The address displayed beneath it was Marianne's house.

Evan stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

Claire stared at the screen.

The nursery was in that house.

The locked drawer was in that nursery.

And someone had just reported smoke.
