Chapter 13 - The Price of Coming Home.

Eleanor contacted them at 11:02 p.m.
The call came through Claire's old encrypted account.
There was no video.
Only Eleanor's voice.
"Claire."
Claire sat in Voss's temporary command room with headphones pressed to her ears.
"I'm here."
"You always did make everything difficult."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Where are you?"
Eleanor laughed softly.
"You still ask the wrong questions."
Voss signaled for Claire to keep her talking.
"What do you want?"
"What I have always wanted."
"Control?"
"Family."
Claire's face twisted.
"You drugged me."
"I cared for you."
"You made me sick."
"I kept you close."
Claire's voice broke.
"You let Ethan think I was dead."
For the first time, Eleanor sounded angry.
"Your father did that."
"Because he was afraid of you."
A long silence followed.
Then Eleanor said, "Bring me the trust documents."
Voss wrote a question on a pad and slid it toward Claire.
Claire read it.
"Where?"
"Linden Road."
Ethan shook his head violently from across the room.
Claire ignored him.
"And if I come?"
"Your brother's family gets to keep breathing."
Lily felt every muscle in her body tighten.
Voss immediately began tracing the call.
Eleanor continued.
"Come alone."
"No."
Claire's answer surprised everyone.
"I'm done being alone with you."
Eleanor inhaled sharply.
"Then Noah pays for your courage."
Lily surged to her feet.
Ethan caught her before she could grab the phone.
Claire's face went white.
"You won't touch him."
"I already did."
The line disconnected.
Lily turned on Claire.
"What does that mean?"
No one had an answer.
Doctors rechecked Noah immediately.
He was healthy.
His food, bottles, clothing, and medication were tested.
Nothing dangerous was found.
Then Officer Bennett remembered the diaper bag tracker.
The bag had been seized as evidence after the first search.
It was stored in the police property room.
Inside the lining, technicians found something they had missed.
A tiny sealed vial.
The vial contained a concentrated liquid sedative.
Attached was a handwritten note in Eleanor's script.
FOR WHEN LILY FINALLY BREAKS.
Voss stared at the vial.
"She planned to make it look like Lily drugged her own child."
Lily sat down because her legs stopped working.
That was the real plan.
Not merely to exhaust her.
Not merely to humiliate her.
Eleanor had been constructing evidence.
Videos of Lily crying.
Recordings of arguments.
A child repeatedly becoming ill.
A sedative hidden inside Lily's bag.
When the final incident happened, Eleanor would call authorities and present herself as the concerned grandmother.
Lily would lose Noah.
Ethan might lose his wife.
Eleanor would gain control of another child.
Claire whispered, "She was replacing me."
Ethan looked at his sister.
The anger between them did not disappear.
But something else joined it.
Understanding.
Voss placed the fake trust documents into a black folder.
"We're going to Linden Road."
Lily stood.
"I'm coming."
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
Lily looked straight at him.
"Ask instead of deciding."
He remembered the safe house.
His jaw tightened.
"Do you want to come?"
"Yes."
"Then we go together."
Voss looked at both of them.
"You follow every instruction I give."
They agreed.
At 1:37 a.m., the convoy approached the house where the Carter family nightmare had begun.
One upstairs window was glowing.

A woman in a dark blue dress stood behind the glass.
Waiting.
