Chapter 14 - The Last Rule.

The old house smelled of dust, cold wood, and rain carried in through a broken window.

Claire entered first wearing a concealed microphone.

Detective Voss and two tactical officers waited beyond the kitchen wall.

Ethan and Lily remained in a surveillance van outside with Noah and Officer Bennett.

Lily hated every second of it.

On the monitor, Claire walked into the dining room carrying the black folder.

Eleanor stood at the far end of the table in a dark blue V-neck dress almost identical to the one she wore on the day of her arrest.

Her hair was tied back.

Her posture was perfect.

For one impossible moment, she looked like nothing had happened.

"You came home."

Claire stopped six feet away.

"This was never my home."

Eleanor smiled.

"Children always say that when they are angry."

"I'm thirty years old."

"Not to me."

Claire placed the folder on the table.

"The trust papers."

Eleanor did not reach for them.

"Where is Ethan?"

"Safe."

"And Lily?"

"Safer without you."

Eleanor's mouth tightened.

"She poisoned him against me."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"You poisoned children."

Silence filled the room.

Eleanor stepped closer.

"I never poisoned you."

"You made me sick."

"I made you need me."

The words were so calm that Lily felt nauseated in the van.

Claire stared at her mother.

"Say that again."

Eleanor realized too late why Claire asked.

Her eyes flicked toward Claire's collar.

"You're wearing a wire."

She lunged.

Claire stumbled backward.

Voss shouted through the radio.

"Move."

Officers entered.

Eleanor grabbed the black folder and ran through the rear corridor.

Instead of heading outside, she went upstairs.

Voss followed.

A hidden door inside the old nursery opened into a narrow service staircase.

Eleanor vanished into it.

The surveillance monitor lost her.

Lily stared at the screen.

"Where does that go?"

Ethan looked horrified.

"The basement."

Then the van door suddenly opened.

Officer Bennett turned.

Martin Shaw stood outside holding a handgun.

"Nobody move."

Bennett reached for his weapon.

Shaw fired into the ceiling.

Noah screamed.

Lily covered the baby with her body.

Shaw grabbed Ethan by the collar and dragged him from the van.

"She wants her son."

Lily clutched Noah.

"Take me instead."

Shaw looked at her.

"You're the problem she never planned for."

A shadow moved behind him.

Rachel swung a tire iron into Shaw's wrist.

The gun dropped.

Bennett tackled him.

Ethan broke free.

Inside the house, Voss radioed for help.

"Eleanor is in the basement."

Then came a second transmission.

"She has Claire."

Ethan ran before anyone could stop him.

Lily handed Noah to Rachel and followed.

They reached the basement doorway as Eleanor backed Claire toward the same steel room where Rachel had been found.

Eleanor held a shard of broken glass against Claire's throat.

"Everyone stays back."

Ethan stopped.

"Mom."

Eleanor looked at him.

Her expression softened instantly.

"There you are."

Ethan's voice shook.

"Let her go."

"She keeps leaving me."

"Because you hurt her."

"I loved her."

"That isn't love."

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

"You sound like your father."

Ethan stepped closer.

"Good."

The word struck her harder than a shout.

Her hand trembled.

Claire moved.

Voss fired a taser.

Eleanor collapsed.

The glass shattered harmlessly on the floor.

Officers rushed forward and cuffed her again.

Eleanor lay on the concrete, breathing hard, staring up at Ethan.

"You will regret choosing her."

Ethan looked at Lily, Claire, Rachel, and then at his mother.

"I'm not choosing one woman over another."

May you like

He knelt just enough for Eleanor to hear him clearly.

"I'm choosing a life where you don't make the rules."
