Chapter 3 - The Card for Ethan.

Ethan did not put the memory card into his phone.
Officer Bennett had returned to the house before the patrol car even reached the end of the street.
He had forgotten to collect photographs of Lily's wrist and the damaged baseboard.
When Ethan showed him the card, Bennett's expression changed.
"Don't open it yet."
Lily sat on the nursery floor with Noah sleeping across her lap.
"Why would she leave something for Ethan if she thought she was going to get away with this?"
Bennett placed the card inside an evidence envelope.
"People who control families often prepare for the moment they lose control."
Ethan looked sick.
"You think she expected today?"
"I think she expected resistance eventually."
That answer stayed with Lily after the officer left.
Downstairs, the kitchen still looked exactly as it had before the arrest.
One glass stood beside the sink.
Half a lemon floated in cloudy water.
A dish towel hung straight from the oven handle because Eleanor required it to be centered.
Lily stared at it until Ethan pulled the towel down and dropped it on the floor.
The tiny rebellion made her laugh.
The laugh became a sob.
Ethan held her without speaking.
For a long time, Lily could only hear Noah breathing between them.
Then she asked the question she had been afraid to ask.
"Why did you believe me today?"
Ethan closed his eyes.
"Because I finally heard her."
He showed Lily the baby-monitor app on his phone.
Three nights earlier, Ethan had noticed that the nursery monitor kept disconnecting while he was at work.
He assumed it was a technical problem until he checked the device logs.
The camera had not been failing.
Someone had been switching it off manually.
That morning, Ethan had hidden a second audio recorder behind the kitchen speaker.
He had listened from his office parking garage while Eleanor ordered Lily to clean the kitchen with a feverish child in her arms.
He had heard Lily ask to rest.
He had heard Eleanor refuse.
He had heard a slap.
Lily's hand rose to her cheek.
She had almost forgotten that part.
"You heard that?"
Ethan nodded.
"I called the police before I came home."
Lily looked at him through tears.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was terrified she'd see your reaction and know."
There was shame in his face.
"And because I should have believed you before I needed a recording."
Lily wanted to tell him it was okay.
But it was not okay.
Eleanor had spent years training Ethan to doubt discomfort and worship appearances.
Lily had spent six weeks paying for that training.
Before she could answer, Ethan's phone rang.
It was Officer Bennett.
Ethan listened for less than thirty seconds.
Then he sat down.
"What?"
Lily watched the blood leave his face.
He ended the call slowly.
"They opened the memory card."
"And?"
Ethan swallowed.
"It's video."
Lily felt her pulse in her throat.
"Of what?"
Ethan looked toward the hallway as if he expected his mother to walk back into the house.
"Of you."
His voice became almost inaudible.
"Weeks of you."
Lily's stomach turned.
"She recorded me?"
"Not just you."
He looked down at Noah.
"She recorded our son too."
May you like
Then he said the part that made Lily stop breathing.
"And Bennett says one clip appears to show her putting something into Noah's medicine."
